Donald R. Godwin
Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students
My career path clearly reflects the impact of both the academic and spiritual foundation provided to me by my Marist High School education. I recall that it was at a high school retreat that I realized that I had been called to do God’s work in a special way. I sensed a powerful spirit within me to do good and to try and live out the message Jesus taught. After pursuing my undergraduate degree at Marist College, I began my career teaching at a Catholic school in Newark, NJ, while also discerning religious life with the Marist Brothers. I later returned to Marist College as a graduate student, and full-time administrator in Student Affairs. Upon earning my Master’s degree, I believe God called me to Villanova University, where I continued my vocation of transforming the hearts and minds of future leaders. My hope is that our students are developing the knowledge, skills and values that will enable them to make a positive contribution to society. The best person I can point them to as a role model is Jesus.
Following ten years of service at Villanova University, while earning a doctoral degree from Widener University, I took a position as Dean of Students at Marywood University in Scranton, Pa. Today, my career and vocation is serving as the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students at the University of San Diego in San Diego, CA.
