Carmen M. Vazquez
Vice President, Student Affairs
Carmen M. Vazquez was appointed Vice President for Student Affairs, in 2005. She has many years of experience as a student affairs educator and practitioner. She began her career at the State University of New York at Stony Brook where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in psychology and sociology and a Master's degree of Social Work. Vazquez served in various positions at Stony Brook, including adjunct faculty in the school of social welfare, dean of students and assistant vice president for alumni relations. She served as assistant vice chancellor for student life at the University of California, San Diego, from 2002-2005.
As Dean, Vazquez oversaw the development of a new 150,000 square foot student activities center, created a student community development specialization in the master’s degree program of the School of Social Welfare, and advocated on behalf of 21,000 students. As assistant vice chancellor, she provided leadership and oversight to the university centers, student organizations, university events office and student programs business office. During her tenure at the University of California, San Diego, she provided leadership for the 174,000 square foot, $63 million University Center, Price Center Expansion.
Vice President Vazquez has been actively leading in campus expansion projects, meeting with students, and engaging in strategic planning for the division in concert with the university Strategic Directions. She has a student-centered philosophy, is dedicated to the holistic development of college students, and brings enthusiasm to her leadership role.
For the past nine years, Vice President Vazquez has led the Student Affairs Division, which, in the Catholic tradition, creates an educational environment which motivates and inspires student learning and personal development, serves the University community, and challenges students to make a positive contribution to society.
- The Student Life area is responsible for the University Center, Student Life Pavilion, Associated Student Government, student activities, student organizations, Greek Life, United Front Multicultural Center, Women’s Center, Student Leadership and Involvement Center, Outdoor Adventures, Campus Scheduling, and Campus Recreation.
- The Dean Of Students’ area is responsible for Residential Life, Center for Student Success (retention services and initiatives, transfer and commuter student services, new student orientation), Assistant Dean of Students office (Graduate Student Life, and Student Conduct), Associate Dean of Students/Director of Assessment and Planning (assessment, graduate student training and development, strategic planning coordination), AVP/Dean of Students (crisis management, supervision of units in the area).
- The Wellness area is comprised of the Center for Health and Wellness Promotion, the Counseling Center, Disability Services, and the Student Health Center.
- Resource Management oversees educational and general budgets, supports auxiliary services and the human resource aspects of the division.
- University Scheduling is responsible for academic and event scheduling, while Parking Services is responsible for Kiosk Informational Assistant Greeters, distribution of parking permits, issuance of parking citations, and parking/traffic plans for major events.
- Student Affairs and University Relations Development Partnership.
The Hahn University Center has been expanded to accommodate the social, cultural, facility and service needs of the undergraduate, graduate and professional students at USD. The Student Life Pavilion has become the hub of campus life, a central gathering place for fostering a sense of community among students, faculty, staff, alumni and the larger community.
