Learning Strategy: Experiential/Hands On Learning

Description

Experiential Learning is the "process of learning through experience, more specifically, designed as learning through reflection on doing" (Kolb Experiential Learning Model). This learning strategy provides opportunities for students to "learn by doing." Experiential learning gives students the chance to practice real life, applicable skills and shape their experience into meaningful, authentic learning. Experiential learning is most often used on college campuses with student employees and leaders.

Learning Strategies this can be confused with

  • Role playing/simulations: is conducted in a "not real world" setting
  • Peer teaching, collaboration, or facilitation: the focus is on the peer teacher
  • Field experience: the location matters and is essential
