Strategic Directions

Drop Shadow

Strengthen Undergraduate Research and Scholarship

Objective

Ensure that undergraduate students from all disciplines have the opportunity to engage in research and creative activities during their time at the University of San Diego, and establish faculty/student research and scholarship as a distinguishing feature of an undergraduate education.

Keck Advisory Board

The Keck Advisory Board advises Sarah Kriz, Director of Undergraduate Research, on issues concerning the development of USD's Office of Undergraduate Research. Keck Advisory Board members include 10 faculty and administrators from different departments and programs that support and encourage undergraduate research and scholarship.

Progress
The Office of Undergraduate Research website now includes detailed descriptions of undergraduate research and scholarship opportunities available for students and faculty. The site also contains data and reports about programs offered.
Collaboration with campus departments has expanded to include the Institute for College Initiatives and the Center for Student Success.
The office sponsored a lunch for transfer students interested in undergraduate research at USD. Each transfer student attending was paired with a faculty member to discuss potential research opportunities in their major.
USD became an Enhanced Institutional Member of the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR).
The Office for Undergraduate Research routinely offers half-day workshops for faculty on mentoring undergraduates in research and scholarship. The office also provides information for faculty about using the Blackboard Organization feature as a multi-semester collaboration space for faculty-student projects.
The new Research Course Development Grant Program provides up to 10 stipends for faculty who want improve their research-intensive classes. Faculty work with the Director of Undergraduate Research to re-structure a course syllabus in order to strengthen and highlight the research aspects of the course content.

Creative Collaborations was renamed "Undergraduate Research Conference" to more accurately reflect the experience for student résumés.

Timeline
In Fall 2012, eight faculty received Research Course Development Grants for the 2012-13 academic year to strengthen the research orientation of a specific course.
The Keck Faculty Fellows Program provides one-year fellowships to faculty in non-STEM disciplines to fund collaborative research or scholarly work with an undergraduate student of their choice. Fellowships are for the calendar year, and New Keck Fellows will be announced in January 2013.
This year's Undergraduate Research Conference (formerly Creative Collaborations) will be held on April 18, 2013, throughout the University Center and Student Life Pavilion. In addition, student work will be showcased for three weeks in the Exhibit Hall of the Student Life Pavilion.
Continuing undergraduate students are encouraged to apply for a Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) grant. Participants will undertake a 10 week independent research or scholarly project under supervision of a USD faculty mentor. The Office of Undergraduate Research promotes the program for students in non-STEM disciplines as well as those in more traditional research fields.

The Summer Scholars program will be offered again in 2013 to provide discounted on-campus housing, professional development events, and social activities for undergraduate students who conduct research or scholarship on campus over the summer.
