Strategic Directions

Drop Shadow

Renovate General Use Classrooms

Objective

Continue to implement the comprehensive long-term planning process, guided by the Campus Master Plan, for strategically renovating classrooms based on needs assessments using pedagogy-driven design standards focused on teaching and learning. "Classroom crawls" serve as an integral part of the information-gathering process, with supporting recommendations from faculty, students, deans, Facilities Management, the Space Committee, University Design, the Classroom Innovation Committee, and Information Technology Services. This initiative builds upon the WASC reaccreditation theme, "Creating and Sustaining Innovative Learning Spaces."

Classroom Task Force

The Classroom Renovation Task Force, chaired by the Executive Vice President and Provost, uses feedback from classroom crawls and representative stakeholders to prioritize classrooms for summer renovation.

Progress
Intersesson 2012: Double-paned windows and light-dimming window shades were installed in the seven Camino Hall classrooms renovated during Summer 2011.
Summer 2012: Renovations begun in Maher classrooms during Summer 2010 were completed, with the same types of renovations made in Camino Hall during Summer 2011 extended to four more Camino classrooms.
Summer 2012: Serra 204 and Hahn School of Nursing 103 were converted to active learning classrooms. Major upgrades in layout, technology, and furniture will be made in Warren Hall 303, the Grace Courtroom.

Summer 2012: Classroom furniture, layout, and technology were upgraded in Warren Hall 303, the Grace Courtroom. The Federalist skylight and its mounting were repaired.

Timeline
Fall 2012: Facilities Management will evaluate the feasibility of providing air conditioning for classrooms in Camino and Serra Halls. Depending upon the results of this study, some of the funds reserved for classroom renovation may be used to install air conditioning.
Intersesson 2013: Double-paned windows and light-dimming window shades will be installed in the nine Maher and Camino classrooms renovated during Summer 2012.
Spring 2013: The Classroom Task Force will administer a survey to those faculty who taught classes in Serra 204 and Hahn School of Nursing 103 – the new active learning classrooms – during Fall 2012 to learn how well the features of these redesigned spaces support innovative teaching styles beyond the traditional lecture approach.

Spring 2013: The Classroom Task Force will target classrooms in Serra Hall for renovation during Summer 2013, based on needs assessments from classroom crawls.
