DEFINE SUCCESS: proposed objectives for this time period

  • Write a CST statement in simple terms which describes the Catholic Church’s social teaching
  • Survey other universities with the purpose of collecting contact information, identifying potential resources to USD, and understanding how other institutions are living and teaching CST
  • Inventory what USD is currently doing to support CST
  • Using the data collected from the off-campus survey and the on-campus assessment, propose a plan to strengthen USD’s understanding of CST, encourage a dialogue on CST, and develop academic and co-curricular activities that support CST

DISCOVERY: summarize the current situation

  • Review CST documents
  • Inventory how USD currently supports CST
  • Identify what other institutions are doing to support CST

DEVELOP PLAN: proposed timeline with dates

January 2006 - Roll out off-campus survey
- Develop CST website (basic)
- Roll out on-campus inventory
February 2006 - Prepare initial Campus Conversations plan (e.g., themes, dates, speakers)
- Begin data analysis of off-campus survey and on-campus inventory
March 2006 - Develop reports from off-campus survey and on-campus inventory
- Post reports and data on CST website
- Revise Campus Conversations plan using data form survey and inventory
- Prepare budget for proposed CST activities for 2006-2007
April 2006 - Solicit feedback on Campus Conversations plan (e.g., via e-mails, open forums); present survey and inventory findings
- Prepare 2006-2007 work plan to launch CST activities
May 2006 - Propose work plan and oversight structure

Personnel - Hiring of a part-time, administrative support person with web-maintenance duties

SUCCESS: list accomplishments and dates achieved

  • Identified institutions to send off-campus survey (November 2005)
  • Developed CST definition or statement: long version for CST website; short version for off-campus survey and on-campus inventory instruments (December 2005)
  • Developed off-campus survey and e-mailed to Catholic universities and colleges; 30 institutions completed the survey (January 2006)
  • Developed CST website (January-March 2006)
  • Developed on-campus inventory and e-mailed to vice presidents and deans (February 2006)
  • Developed 2006-07 work plan, budget and list of potential speakers (February-April 2006)
  • Collaborated with other departments to create a master calendar focusing on specific CST themes – general agreement to coordinate, co-sponsor and support events (February-April 2006)
  • Synthesized survey and inventory data and drafted summary reports (March-June 2006)
  • Completed final reports: off-campus summary report sent to respondents; off-campus and on-campus reports placed on CST website (June 2006)
