2006-2007 —Building on Our Foundations

BrochureEfforts during the fourth year of the Strategic Directions Initiative will build on previous years' accomplishments. All four of the working committees were active over the summer to prepare for an early fall semester launch of this year's proposed work plans, which are available via the links below.

USD's own Advertising & Creative Services designed a brochure that lists the University's strategic goals and highlights some of the accomplishments achieved last year under each of the four committee-based initiatives. The brochure will be sent to USD employees and distributed to other friends of the University. Click on the image to view a pdf file of the unfolded brochure.

Last year, all four Strategic Directions initiatives were developed by working committees with broad-based representation. The ultimate goal for each initiative is to move from committee structure to a permanent place within the organizational structure of USD. This fall, two of the working committees will begin that important transition.

  • Integrated Learning: First Year Experience: The new Torero Days orientation and the enhanced Preceptorial Program will continue to develop under the joint support of Student Affairs and the College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Internationalization: A Special Assistant to the Provost will facilitate coordination and expansion of USD's international efforts under an International Council.

Two other initiatives will begin the year in their committees, where members will work to strengthen programs, identify resources, and develop transition strategies.

  • Catholic Social Thought: The committee will sponsor a series of speakers and panel discussions, and will assist USD offices in promoting events with CST themes.
  • Inclusion and Diversity: The committee will investigate policies and procedures for recruiting and retaining students, faculty, and staff of color.

Additional Initiatives

Other initiatives that address USD's strategic goals continue under sponsorship of the university's vice presidents and other administrators:

  • School of Peace Studies: A committee of the Provost and deans is working to identify candidates for the position of founding dean.
  • Information Technology: Under the leadership of new Chief Information Officer Chris Wessells, the university is implementing SunGard's Banner Student System and Luminis Portal.
  • Enrollment Management Plan: The Office of Admissions is recruiting new students using goals established in the plan.
  • Academic Master Plan: The Provost is working with University Senate to develop procedures for academic program review.
  • Endowment: Timothy O'Malley, USD's new Vice President for University Relations, is building support to enhance educational opportunities for our students.
  • Marketing: The new Office of Advertising & Creative Services is producing promotional materials to support USD's overall marketing goals.
  • Student Life: The new Borrego residence hall is fully occupied this fall, and a new Missions residence hall with café and fitness center is under construction this year.
  • Scheduling and Event Support: Event scheduling is is being implemented on the new R25 software during Spring semester.
