COUNCIL FOR INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE OF SCHOLARS -
Fulbright Senior Specialists Program

Abstract: The Fulbright Senior Specialists Program is designed to provide
short-term academic opportunities (two to six weeks) for U.S. faculty and
professionals. Shorter grant lengths give specialists greater flexibility to
pursue a grant that works best with their current academic or professional
commitments. Specialists roster candidates are limited to one Specialists
grant per calendar year. Applications for the Fulbright Senior Specialists
Program are accepted on a rolling basis, and peer review of applications
is conducted eight times per year. Program Goals: (a) to increase the
participation of leading U.S. scholars and professionals in Fulbright academic
exchanges; (b) to encourage new activities that go beyond the traditional
Fulbright activities of lecturing and research; (c) to promote increased
connections between U.S. and non-U.S. post-secondary academic institutions.
FUNDING: Grant benefits include international economy fare travel and
approved related expenses plus a $200 per day honorarium. The honorarium
is payable upon completion of the grant and submission of an online final report
and travel expense report. Host institutions normally cover in-country per diem
costs for lodging, meals and transportation.

Abstract: The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation enables highly qualified,
early-stage researchers (under age 40) from abroad, who hold doctorates,

months; an extension of up to 24 months is possible. Researchers of all
nationalities and disciplines may apply to the AvH directly at any time. There

Abstract: The ACLS Fellowship Program invites research applications in all
disciplines of the humanities and humanities-related social sciences.* The ultimate
goal of the project should be a major piece of scholarly work by the applicant that
will take the form of a monograph or other equally substantial form of scholarship.
ACLS does not fund creative work (e.g., novels or films), textbooks, straightforward
translation, or pedagogical projects.  The ACLS Fellowships are intended as salary
replacement to help scholars devote six to twelve continuous months to full-time
research and writing.

Abstract: Under the Scholar-in-Residence (SIR) Program, interested institutions
submit proposals to invite scholars to teach one or more courses and to be in
residence for a semester or an academic year. In addition to teaching courses,
scholars give campus-wide and community lectures, help initiate international
programs and contribute to curriculum development. Although preference is given
to proposals in the humanities or social sciences, other fields focusing on
international issues will be considered.

INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION IN CHEMISTRY BETWEEN
US INVESTIGATORS AND THEIR COUNTERPARTS IN GERMANY,
UNITED KINGDOM AND CHINA  (ICC)

Abstract: The National Science Foundation (NSF) seeks to enhance
opportunities for collaborative activities between U.S. and foreign
investigators. To realize this goal the Chemistry Division at NSF has partnered
with the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG; German Research Foundation),
the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of the United
Kingdom and the National Science Foundation of China (NSFC).  NSF Chemistry
will accept collaborative research proposals in chemistry that establish new bilateral
collaborations between U.S. investigators and investigators from Germany, United
Kingdom or China.  The proposals will be written in English.The program seeks new
and highly innovative 3-year collaborative projects that break new ground and
demonstrate high level of synergy between the collaborating investigators.  The program
will not accept proposals for projects that were funded in the past or are currently funded
by other funding sources. The program will also not accept proposals for projects that
largely overlap or are closely related to research projects that are currently carried out
in the collaborators' laboratories.  The proposed 3-year projects must be in areas that
are supported by the NSF Division of Chemistry programs in Analytical and Surface
Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry and Theoretical
and Computational Chemistry.  The program encourages the development and use of cyber
infrastructure to facilitate communication, data sharing and remote control of
instrumentation to increase the level of synergy of the proposed projects.  The
program also encourages meaningful participation of graduate students, postdoctoral
research associates and juniorinvestigators in the proposed international research
collaborations since it seeks to develop a diverse, globally-engaged, U.S.
science and engineering workforce.  Research activities of U.S. graduate students,
postdoctoral research associates and junior researchers, including those from
underrepresented groups, in the laboratories of international collaborators should
be an integral part of proposals submitted to this program.

Abstract:  Collaborative Research Grants support: original research undertaken by a team of
two or more scholars; or research coordinated by an individual scholar that, because of its scope
or complexity, requires additional staff and resources beyond the individual's salary. Eligible
projects include: (a) research that significantly adds to knowledge and understanding in the
humanities; (b) conferences on topics of major importance in the humanities that will benefit
ongoing research; (c) archaeology projects that interpret and communicate the results of
archaeological fieldwork. Projects may encompass excavation, materials analysis,
laboratory work, field reports, and preparation of interpretive monographs; (d) translations
into English of works that provide insight into the history, literature, philosophy, and artistic
achievements of other cultures; and (e) research that uses the knowledge, methods, and
perspectives of the humanities to enhance understanding of science, technology, and
medicine. FUNDING: Awards are made for one to three years and normally range
from $25,000 to $100,000 per year. The use of federal matching funds is encouraged.
Federal matching funds are released on a 1:1 basis when a grantee secures gift funds
from eligible third parties.

Abstract: This program is for scholars in the humanities to do research in China. US
citizens and permanent residents who have lived in the United States continuously for
at least three years prior to the application deadline are eligible to apply. This program
supports individuals with the PhD or equivalent to do in-depth research on China or
the Chinese portion of a comparative study. Grants are offered for 4 to 12 months
of continuous research in China.

Abstract: The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) in the United States
and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE)of the United
Kingdom acting through the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) in the
United Kingdom are working together to offer support for digitization projects in
the humanities. These grants provide funding for one year of development in any
of the following areas: new digitization projects and pilot projects, the addition
of important materials to existing digitization projects, or the development of
infrastructure (either technical "middleware," tools, or knowledge-sharing) to
support U.S.-England digitization work.

Applications should explain the need for the U.S.-England partnership and provide
workable solutions to some of the issues of managing and developing transatlantic
collections. Thus, activities supported may include:

• proposing methods to rejoin via digitization "split" humanities collections
  that currently exist on either side of the Atlantic;
• developing a detailed plan for the digitization of humanities collections that
  could benefit U.S.-England research and performing a limited pilot digitization
  program to test infrastructure and procedures;
• connecting existing split digitized collections, detailing suitable transatlantic
  standards and communication strategies;
• creating a virtual archive or resource that would serve as middleware to join
  complementary materials (analog or digital) in the U.S. and England;
• articulating how collaboration between U.S. and English digitization efforts
  might function, including but not limited to developing selection criteria, identifying
  the physical nature of the collection and its effect on digitization workflow,
  undertaking test data capture, identifying suitable standards for international
  collections, and indicating how collections could be exploited in U.S.- England
  research; and
• comparing the needs of researchers in both the U.S. and England and their
  uses of digitized primary resources.

Awards range from $100,000 to $240,000 (approximately £50,000 to £120,000)
for a one-year period.

Abstract: With funding provided by Title VIII (The Act for Research and
Training for Eastern Europe and Independent States of Former Soviet Union),
EES offers short-term grants to scholars working on policy relevant projects on
East Europe. Special consideration will be given to projects on Southeast Europe,
or projects that can be credibly linked to issues in the Western Balkans. Projects
should focus on fields in the social sciences and humanities including, but not limited to:
Anthropology, History, Political Science, Slavic Languages and Literatures, and
Sociology. All projects should aim to highlight their potential policy relevance.
ELIGIBILITY: These Title VIII grants are available to American academic experts
and practitioners, including advanced graduate students, engaged in specialized
research requiring access to Washington, DC and its research institutions.

Abstract: The Kennan Institute offers Short-Term Grants to scholars whose
research in the social sciences or humanities focuses on the former Soviet Union
(excluding the Baltic States), and who demonstrate a particular need to utilize the
library, archival, and other specialized resources of the Washington, D.C. area.
Policy-relevant research is preferred. ELIGIBILITY: Academic participants must
either possess a doctoral degree or be doctoral candidates who have nearly
completed their dissertations. FUNDING: Short-Term Grants provide a stipend
of $100 per day. The Kennan Institute cannot provide office space for
Short-Term scholars. Travel and accommodation expenses are not directly

EAST ASIA AND PACIFIC SUMMER INSTITUTES FOR

Abstract: The East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes provide U.S.
graduate students in science and engineering:

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT

Abstract: The American Association for the Advancement of Science
manages and administers Science & Technology Policy Fellowships in
six areas to provide the opportunity for accomplished scientists and
engineers to participate in and contribute to the federal policymaking
process while learning firsthand about the intersection of science and policy.
The fellowships in congressional offices are funded by approximately 30
partner scientific and engineering societies. The fellowships in executive branch
agencies are funded by the hosting offices. ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must have
a PhD or an equivalent doctoral-level degree at the time of application. Individuals
with a master's degree in engineering and at least three years of post-degree
professional experience also may apply. Some programs require additional

EAST-WEST CENTER - POSCO VISITING FELLOWSHIPS

Abstract: The POSCO Visiting Fellowship Program, endowed by POSCO,
invites outstanding scholars and policy makers, principally from North America
and also from Australia, New Zealand, and European countries, to engage in
policy-relevant research on political, security, and economic issues in Northeast
Asia, including Korea. During the year 1 March 2008 through 28 February 2009,
the East-West Center proposes to invite six visiting fellows. These fellows will spend
one or two months each carrying out policy-related research on issues regarding
Northeast Asia that are of common concern -- such as globalization, economic
regionalism, economic restructuring, political change, and the changing East Asian
security environment, including the Korean Peninsula. In particular, the Year 2008
POSCO Fellowship Program is intended to generate constructive and informative
research on four important issues:

• issues concerning the two Koreas and Northeast Asia;
• security issues for Korea and Northeast Asia;
• economic and social aspects of Korea-related issues;
• political aspects of Korea-related issues.

FUNDING: POSCO visiting fellows are in residence at the East-West Center for
one to two months and undertake research and writing on an agreed topic. Fellows
are provided with a stipend and round trip economy airfare between their home base
and Honolulu. They are required to give one seminar, produce a peer reviewed article,
and join in East-West Center activities. Proposals for cost-shared fellowships are welcomed.

Abstract: The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation will grant the
Sofja Kovalevskaja Award, which is funded by the Federal Ministry for Education
and Research, to young scientists and scholars from abroad with outstanding research
records. The aim is to give award winners an opportunity to concentrate on high-level,
innovative research work of their own choice in Germany, virtually without
administrative constraints, and thus to promote the internationalisation of research in
Germany. The award should allow the winners to finance their own working groups
at their selected German university and non-university research institutions and to
cover their living expenses.Recipients of the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award will be granted
funding totalling up to 1.2 million EUR to conduct research of their own choice during a

Abstract: Believing that education is fundamental to world peace and understanding,
members of the P.E.O. Sisterhood provide grants-in-aid for selected women from
other countries for graduate study in the United States or Canada. The maximum

Abstract: The AAS administers a National Science Foundation grant, which
provides funding for airline travel to international science meetings. This funding

to normal international meetings.

Abstract: The Short-Term Travel Grants program provides fellowships for up to
eight weeks to US postdoctoral scholars and holders of other graduate degrees
for independent or collaborative research projects in Europe and Eurasia.
Fellowships are available to applicants who demonstrate how their research will
make a substantive contribution to knowledge of the contemporary political, economic,
historical, or cultural developments in the region and how such knowledge is relevant to
US foreign policy. The US Department of State Title VIII Program, the primary source
of support for the STG Program, supports research topics that strengthen the fields of

Abstract: IRES aims to provide high quality educational experiences for small groups
of U.S. undergraduate and/or graduate students through active research participation

Abstract: Tinker Foundation institutional grants are awarded to organizations
and institutions that promote the interchange and exchange of information within
the community of those concerned with the affairs of Spain, Portugal, Ibero-America
and Antarctica. (For the Foundation's purposes, Ibero-America is defined as the
Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries of the Western Hemisphere.)
Programmatically, the Foundation funds projects addressing environmental policy,
economic policy or governance issues. Projects should have a strong public policy
component, offer innovative solutions to problems facing these regions, and
incorporate new mechanisms for addressing these programmatic areas.
Activities may include, but are not limited to, research projects and conferences
related to the Foundation's areas of interest. The Foundation encourages collaboration
between organizations in the United States and Iberia or Latin America and among institutions
in those regions. FUNDING: In 2006, about 16 grants were made, ranging from
$30,000 to $150,000.

Abstract: The Abe Fellowship is designed to encourage international multidisciplinary
research on topics of pressing global concern. The program seeks to foster the
development of a new generation of researchers who are interested in policy-

members of a bilateral and global research network built around such topics.
Applicants are invited to submit proposals for research in the social sciences or

Abstract: The Council of American Overseas Research Centers Multi-
Country Research Fellowship Program for Advanced Multi-Country Research -
The program is open to U.S. doctoral candidates and scholars who have already earned
their Ph.D. in fields in the humanities, social sciences, or allied natural sciences and
wish to conduct research of regional or trans-regional significance.  It is anticipated that
approximately ten awards of up to $9,000 each will be given to scholars who wish to
carry out research on broad questions of multi-country significance in the fields of
humanities, social sciences, and related natural sciences.  Scholars must carry out
research in at least one of the countries which host overseas research centers:

Abstract: Rhodes Scholars study for two and, with special permission, three years
at Oxford University in Britain. Study can be in any field and must lead to a degree.
Study can be at the graduate or undergraduate level. Some Rhodes Scholars study

pays for tuition, fees, travel to and from home to Oxford, and an allowance that is
