This course will examine the rule of law in comparative perspective. Students will learn how scholars and policy makers attempt to define, measure, and ultimately promote the rule of law. In the process, students will study theories from political science and other disciplines that examine societal compliance with the law, the accountability of state actors to the law, and the provision of basic rights and access to justice under the law. In the process, students will learn about some key case studies and cross-national data sources that illustrate the challenges and practices that affect the rule of law in different countries. Note: Course will be canceled if there are fewer than six (6) paid students enrolled as of Monday, July 7.

The purpose of this course is to examine how important political issues in Latin America are treated in film. We will seek to understand how films (both U.S. and Latin American) reflect popular opinion and understanding of specific political events and issues. Topics covered include: revolutions in Cuba and Central America, military authoritarianism, democratization, human rights, justice and truth commissions, drug trafficking, urban violence and the rule of law, and indigenous rights and environmental issues. Note: Course will be canceled if there are fewer than six (6) paid students enrolled as of Monday, May 5.
