Etheridge, K.
A musical and social history of what is sometimes called “The Modern Jazz Era,” beginning with the birth of bebop in the 1940s. Indepth study of bebop musical style and the contributions of such legendary musicians as Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Bud Powell. Careful examination of: 1) the close connection between the jam sessions by young virtuosos in Harlem nightclubs and the rise of black consciousness just preceding the Civil Rights movement; 2) the broader significance of the jazz world and its link to American culture during times of war. The influence of bebop on subsequent styles will also be explored. Study through reading, writing, guided listening and live performances. Concert attendance will be required. No previous musical training required. Fulfills the Core Curriculum fine arts requirement. Note: Course will be canceled if there are fewer than six (6) paid students enrolled as of Monday, May 5.
