ARTH 338W City and Utopia: Introduction to History of Urbanism / 3 units

What is a city? How is it imagined, constructed and transformed? By using these questions as a starting point, this course will trace the history of the modern city. From utopian visions and early models of urban planning to concerns about growing sprawl and slums, the course material will also explore a range of urban concerns and responses by historical and contemporary scholars and artists. Note: Course will be canceled if there are fewer than six (6) paid students enrolled as of Monday, June 16.

A course in photography that introduces students to basic camera operations. The course will explore color theory and investigate the perceptual and psychological implications of color imagery. Emphasis will be on creating color negatives and digital prints within the fine art traditions. Students must have access to a film camera and anticipate expenses in the neighborhood of $250-$350 for purchases of film, ink usage and printing paper. No prerequisites, but course encourages serious student work firmly grounded in fine art traditions. Note: Course will be canceled if there are fewer than six (6) paid students enrolled as of Monday, May 5.
