The Department of Learning and Teaching offers several credential programs to prepare teacher candidates for the 12th grade level and below: the Multiple Subject credential, the Single Subject credential, and the Education Specialist credential in Mild/Moderate Disabilities. An Education Specialist in Deaf and Hard of Hearing is also available through partner program with the John Tracy Clinic.
Multiple Subject Credential and Single Subject Credential
The Multiple Subject credential is appropriate for self-contained classrooms typically found in elementary schools. The Single Subject credential is for subject-matter teachers typically assigned to middle school and high school positions. The Preliminary Education Specialist Credential with Mild/Moderate Authorization is appropriate for special education settings in grades K-12.
The coursework and field experience requirements for the multiple subject and single subject preliminary teaching credentials are described below.
Some of the features of our multiple subject and single subject credential program:
- Preparation to teach children from non-English and culturally diverse backgrounds in regular classroom settings.
- Preparation to establish healthy and inclusive classroom settings for typical and exceptional learners in regular classroom settings.
- Substantive collaborative partnerships with school districts in teacher preparation and induction.
- Formative and summative assessments against articulated "Teacher Performance Expectations".
Preliminary Education Specialist Credential
The Education Specialist credential admission and requirements are specific to each sub-specialty.
