Credential Programs

The Department of Learning and Teaching offers several credential programs to prepare teacher candidates for the 12th grade level and below: the Multiple Subject credential, the Single Subject credential, and the Education Specialist credential in three areas: Mild/Moderate Disabilities, Moderate/Severe Disabilities, and Early Childhood Special Education.

Education Specialist Credentials with English Learner Authorization
The Education Specialist credential admission and requirements are specific to each sub-speciality. For detailed information on the Education Specialist credentials, visit this link.

Multiple Subject Credential and Single Subject Credential
The Multiple Subject credential is appropriate for self-contained classrooms typically found in elementary schools. The Single Subject credential is for subject-matter teachers typically assigned to middle school and high school positions. The Education Specialist credentials in Mild/Moderate and Moderate/Severe Disabilities are appropriate for special education settings in grades K-12. The Early Childhood specialist credential applies to children with disabilities from birth through pre-school.

The coursework and field experience requirements for the multiple subject and single subject preliminary teaching credentials are described below. Further requirements for these preliminary credentials are detailed here.

Some of the features of our new multiple subject and single subject credential program:

  1. Preparation to teach children from non-English and culturally diverse backgrounds in regular classroom settings.
  2. Preparation to establish healthy and inclusive classroom settings for typical and exceptional learners in regular classroom settings.
  3. Substantive collaborative partnerships with school districts in teacher preparation and induction.
  4. Formative and summative assessments against newly articulated "Teacher Performance Expectations".
  5. A final summative assessment (PACT) that must be passed before the credential can be issued.

The following themes are interwoven throughout course work in the credential program:

  • Inquiry/reflection/research (teacher-as-researcher)
  • Values (character, ethics, responsibility, respect, dignity)
  • Service (service learning)
  • Social justice/democracy/community
  • Diversity/inclusivity/unity
