Clinical Instruction Benchmark Assessment (CIBA) Requirements
Practicum experience includes a combination of peer counseling related to personal/social, academic and career development issues; community service programs serving adult populations; job shadowing of professional counselors. At least 40 hours of the practicum experience involves direct client contact. Prior to enrolling in Practicum, the CIBA requirements must be met and verified with student's advisors. As well, an interview with student's adviors must be conducted The CIBA Packet is to be completed with advisors during this interview process.
To promote a deeper understanding of the counseling process and the roles of counselor and client, students are required to show participation in 25 hours of interpersonal, career, family or pastoral counseling in individual or group settings. This requirement must be completed before the student enrolls in the fieldwork experience. Counseling services experienced up to two years prior to entering graduate study may be used to meet this requirement. Prior to enrolling in Practicum Professional Liability Insurance must be obtained by student. Finally, the following coursework and centerpieces must be completed and reviwed with advisor.

Students present the following papers from First Year coursework in the program for the CIBA:
- COUN 503 (Professional Orientation and Ethics in Counseling)
Self Assessment Paper - COUN 504 (Pre-practicum in Counseling Techniques)
Clinical Assessment forms - COUN 520 (Counseling: Theory and Practice)

Verification of Required Counseling Hours
To promote a deeper understanding of the counseling process and the roles of counselor and client, students are required to have completed a minimum of 25 hours of interpersonal, career, family, or pastoral counseling in individual or group settings. At least 15 counseling hours must be completed before the student enrolls in Practicum (COUN 588P or 589P). Any uncompleted hours of the required 25 hours must be completed by the time the student enrolls in Fieldwork (COUN 590F or Internship (COUN 592F, COUN 593F). Counseling services experienced up to two years prior to entering graduate study may be used to meet this requirement.

Your advisor and course instructors will often have information about specific opportunities during a particular semester. Please attach the Completed Counseling Hours form to the Practicum Readiness Certification Form. Turn in all forms to the Counseling Executive Program Assistant prior to your CIBA interview with your faculty advisor.
