Shaun Harper Speaks at SOLES
Succeeding in the City: Black and Latino Male Achievers and their Pathways from Urban High Schools through College
On October 10, 2013, Dr. Shaun R. Harper, Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, gave a powerful talk focusing on his recently completed qualitative study of 415 Black and Latino males from 40 New York City public high schools. Nearly 200 people attended this speaker event, which included students, faculty, higher education and K-12 administrators, and community members from USD, UCSD, San Diego State University, and High Tech High. Also, we were pleased to host an educational group from Tijuana, Mexico.
Dr. Harper believes the underachievement and negative stereotypes of boys and men of color has created the normalization of society having low expectation for this population. Instead, he has changed the narrative about young men of color by paying
