The university was founded in 1949, with official charters for the San Diego College for Men, the College for Women and the School of Law.  The San Diego College for Men and the College for Women then merged in 1972 to form the School of Education.

“We are delighted to celebrate SOLES’ 40th anniversary,” said Dean Paula A. Cordeiro. "This is an exciting time to reflect on all of the School's accomplishments over the past four decades."

The yearlong celebration will feature events to honor the four decades of the school’s history. The festivities begin on April 11 with the SOLES’ 40th Anniversary Birthday Bash from 5:30pm to 7:00pm at O’Toole’s Lounge in the USD Hahn University Center. All three of the School's deans from the past forty years will be in attendance, Monsignor William Elliott, Dr. Edward DeRoche, and Dean Cordeiro.

SOLES will launch its 40th Anniversary Photo Project at the mixer.  Every guest will have the opportunity to have his or her snapshot taken.  The photos, along with others collected throughout this commemorative year, will be used to honor SOLES students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends in an online photo gallery. The Photo Project will continue in Mother Rosalie Hill Hall, so SOLES friends and alumni may visit and participate in the project throughout the year.

Another opportunity to celebrate the occasion is the 4th of July Celebration. SOLES friends and alumni are invited to bring their families, chairs and blankets to SOLES' West Terrace and enjoy a spectacular view of several San Diego fireworks shows while enjoying snacks and beverages.

This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the San Diego Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) Unit, which is headquartered in SOLES. The unit was established at USD and San Diego State University (SDSU) in 1982. Since then, the Battalion has grown from an initial cadre of 28 to its current strength of nearly 280 students from multiple area universities.

The Institute for Nonprofit Education and Research will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year. Developed in 2002, its staff and students continue to advance best practices and examine issues of importance in the nonprofit and philanthropic community.
