Student Resources

The Global Center strives to provide students with as many resources as possible to help in planning their adventure abroad. In this section, you will find a wide array of information to help make this process as easy as possible.

International Requirement

As part of our commitment to the value of understanding multiple perspectives and the impact of global transformation, SOLES degree students must, as part of their requirements for graduation, undertake an international experience. We believe these experiences contribute to the entire learning and professional preparation processes for our students and graduates.

Options for fulfilling the international requirement may vary between departments. All students are required to first meet with their academic advisor for pre-approval for all options. Please refer to the links below for more information on specific departments and their programs.

Application Procedures

The registration process for global study programs is different from on-campus programs. Students are required to complete an application through the USD international application portal to participate in a global study program.

There are two stages in the application process:

Pre-decision Phase

This stage has 3 documents that require your digital signature.

There are a number of questionnaires requesting for information such as your emergency contacts and passport information. Please have the names, phone numbers, addresses, and email addresses of two people that you would like to be your emergency contacts. You will also be requested to indicate your professional goals and purposes for applying for the program. Your housing options and special dietary needs will also be requested.

Please also have your passport information ready including a scanned or photographed copy of the information page of your passport to upload.

There are documents to help you to prepare for your journey such as links to the Center for Disease Control website and World Health Organization with health information about the locations;US State Department website with safety information about the locations you are going; and, other travel tips. Please read these carefully. If you have not already done so, please visit your medical provider to update your shots and obtain other medical advice ahead of your travel.

This section will be complete once all the boxes next to the documents have a check mark. Once this stage is complete, the Global Center will review the application and consult with the department running the program before sending out a confirmation email to accepted students. Students will then be required to complete the post-decision phase and provide the necessary information by a stated deadline.

Post-Decision Phase

This stage has questionnaires requesting your wellness information. This information is needed so that we can provided the best possible support and advising to you as you prepare for your trip.

Please fill out the Participant Health Information and Wellness Clearance questionnaires PRIOR TO booking a flight. In some cases, students may need to get authorization to travel abroad from their health care providers. If this applies to you, please make sure you see your health care provider as soon as possible and PRIOR to booking a flight! Those students who require a signed doctor clearance and purchase a flight prior to receiving this clearance, take the full responsibility for any non-recuperable flight costs if their doctor deems them unable to participate in the program.

Financing

Global study courses are considered part of the University's academic curriculum. Financial aid, therefore, is available to eligible students. However, it is important to note that financial aid packages may vary depending on which program the student is attending. Students should contact the USD One Stop Student Center to discuss this prior to submitting an application for a course.

SOLES Financial Aid - Students may also explore financial aid available from the School of Leadership and Education Sciences in the form of loans and scholarships by visiting the SOLES Financial Aid website. If you are considering applying for financial aid to assist with the cost of going abroad, be sure to work that element into your personal timeline as well.

There are several other external opportunities to fund research, study abroad, or teaching that could fulfill or contribute to fulfilling the international requirement. Keep in mind that meticulous and early planning is always critical to obtain financial aid. Some foundations, such as Rotary International, require applications over one year in advance. See International Exchange Opportunities for funded opportunities.
