The purpose of the independent study is to explore in-depth a topic of interest and importance to a student. Independent study activities include, but are not limited to, conducting library research, implementing a pilot study or an individual action research study, conducting a program evaluation or policy analysis, preparing and/or implementing a staff development project. Any full-time faculty member may advise independent study students each semester, including summer session. The student may register for 1 to 6 units of independent study per semester, but may only apply a maximum of nine units of independent study to his/her doctoral program. Students must complete the Application for Independent Study or Research form and obtain the signatures of the faculty supervisor, the advisor and the Associate Dean prior to registering for the course.
