This course is designed to prepare students to write and defend their dissertation proposals. It uses a combination seminar/independent study format, which means that course meetings will consist of full group sessions, individual sessions, and independent study work. The goal is to effectively accommodate the differences that students often bring to this course.
Students who are more advanced in a particular area are expected to provide assistance to their less advanced peers by attending designated sessions and offering helpful feedback on others’ work in both oral and written formats. This process typically promotes learning both for those who give and those who received feedback, and is an essential skill for those planning on presenting their work at conferences.
