The Caster Family Center for Nonprofit and Philanthropic Research is part of the Institute for Nonprofit Education and Research at the University of San Diego. The Center is a leading source of information, data, and research on the nonprofit/philanthropic sector. It also provides individualized research, evaluation, and consulting services that strengthen nonprofits and philanthropies. The Associate Director/Senior Researcher will lead and support research projects and related activities undertaken by the Center including training and overseeing 4-6 doctoral research assistants, coordinating the work of project consultants, marketing the Center, securing grants and contracts, reporting and presenting on the work of the Center. This is a temporary position renewable on an annual basis for up to three years.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Detailed below, are in the areas of Research, Administration, Marketing/Outreach/Fundraising, Academic Support

Research Activities (60% time)

  • Directing, coordinating, and managing the ongoing production of nonprofit sector benchmarking reports (e.g. State of Nonprofits Index, Giving and Volunteering Studies, Human Resource Symposium)
  • Meeting with prospective clients to market the work of the Center and secure contracts. This includes designing proposed scope of services and budgets in collaboration with Center Director.
  • Supervising doctoral research assistants, and project consultants assigned to these sector projects
  • Acting as PI on select Center research/evaluation projects and other Center-related studies
  • Writing select articles for publication as assigned
  • Collaborating with other USD Centers and nonprofit research centers at other academic institutions
  • Ensuring master databases are accurate and up-to date
  • Developing and presenting research at targeted academic conferences

Administration (10%)

  • Creating and proposing Center budget for approval by Institute Director
  • Liaising to the Advisory Board including preparing reports for the board
  • In conjunction with Center Director, manage project traffic flow, timelines, and budgets for all Center projects
  • Coordinate with Center Director to liaison with OSP (USD Office of Sponsored Projects) and IRB (Institutional Review Board)
  • Coordinate administration of doctoral student contracts with the Department of Leadership Studies

Marketing/Outreach/Fundraising (15% time)

  • Speaking at local and national conferences on the work of the institute and other nonprofit academic matters as needed
  • Marketing the work of the research center to key stakeholders and potential clients
  • In conjunction with Center Director, source and secure contracts for research studies and other types of project work
  • Overseeing the production of Center publications related to sector benchmarking reports
  • Designing Center events and conferences associated with sector benchmarking projects

Academic Support (15%)

  • Train and support doctoral students in established research methods and data collection and analysis protocols
  • Mentor doctoral students in conference presentations and articles for publication

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters degree required; Doctoral degree strongly preferred. Background in nonprofit/philanthropic studies and/or economics preferred.
  • Experience producing research reports for both academic and practitioner audiences
  • Quantitative research methods to include sampling strategies, descriptive statistics, regression analysis
  • Must have strong background in survey methods
  • Demonstrated proficiency in data analysis and report construction
  • Demonstrated success securing and managing contracts
  • Ability to prioritize workload effectively
  • Ability to be self-directed
  • Demonstrated skills in both oral and written communication
  • Demonstrated experience using organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to remain flexible with job responsibilities
  • Must demonstrate initiative and ability to organize and manage conflicting goals and agendas
  • Previous experience with program evaluation is a plus

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED: Computer, telephone, fax and other related office equipment; classroom AV equipment. Software: Microsoft Office, SPSS and Qualtrics

SALARY INFORMATION: $74,000 - $82,000
