Description

Through curriculum development and facilitation, assist Mid-City CAN in the goal of developing grassroots community leaders, in organizing community residents, community planning, and advocacy campaigns for institutional and social change. Also assist in developing technical assistance services for others.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design, development, and implementation of technical assistance and training activities.
  • Facilitate or co-facilitate local activities, including 2-3 three-day trainings across California and nationwide.
  • Actively work with partners and staff to design programming that meets their needs.
  • Actively promote Mid-City CAN, technical assistance services and develop new technical assistance opportunities.
  • Incorporate market study and evaluation outcomes into technical assistance activities.
  • Work with the Collaborative Director or designated staff to coordinate technical assistance and leadership development projects.
  • Create and execute project work plans, including timeline, roles, and resources needed, using Mid-City CAN planning tools. Revise as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements.
  • Manage day-to-day aspects of technical assistance, training projects, and Building Healthy Communities AmeriCorp program.
  • Correspond and build relationships with Mid-City CAN's members and partners on an on-going basis.
  • Facilitate group processes by reading and responding to group dynamics.
  • Design, develop, and deliver custom program materials, modules, and simulations based on the Mid-City CAN tool kit and methodology, as well as training others in their application.
  • Uses adult learning and leadership development principles to design and develop quality leadership development activities for diverse stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with Mid-City CAN staff on the development of curriculums including the development of content, exercises, cases and simulations based on the Mid-City CAN tool kit and methodology.
  • Design and facilitate community planning processes and community capacity building workshops that include but are not limited to; grassroots resident leadership development academy/institute, grantee retreats/convenings, community planning/public participation processes, co-chair meetings, staff and member development retreats.
  • Identify Collaborative’s leadership and learning needs in collaboration with staff and members in order to develop curriculum or retain external trainers.
  • Maintain technical assistance and training calendars.
  • Structure technical assistance trainings.
  • Provide support to community organizers in developing Momentum Team leaders.
  • Develop and implement leadership development pipeline.
  • Organization, development, and ongoing support of Momentum Teams and their participation in issue-based projects and advocacy campaigns.

Miscellaneous

  • Attend bi-weekly staff meetings and complete program reports
  • Establish and maintain effective working relations with coworkers, administrators, and other agencies and a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Accurately represent Mid-City CAN and maintain positive working relationships with the general public, clients, funding sources, government bodies, etc.
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Collaborative Director.

QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience and Certifications):

  • Bachelor or Master Degree in leadership studies, community psychology, community planning, social work, or related field such as community planning, leadership development, or community organizing.
  • Excellent oral communication, facilitation, and public presentation skills.
  • Curriculum design.
  • Microsoft office suite experience and/or training.
  • Competency and experience in working with different cultures and in different languages.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social, economic, and environmental institutional and social change.
  • Community planning, public participation, or community organizing experience or certification desirable, such as but not limited to: Institute for Cultural Affairs, Internal Association for Public Participation, National Charrette Institute, Graphic Process, Tavistock, PICO, Gamaliel, etc.
  • Bilingual Spanish, Somali, Vietnamese, or other language commonly spoken in the City Heights community preferred.

KNOWDLEGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Experience in and knowledge of adult learning, leadership development and/or capacity building.
  • Exceptional facilitation skills.
  • Understanding of group dynamics and how “hold the space” with a group.
  • Ability to train and/or coach highly motivated adults
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and confidentiality
  • Possess a passion for social justice which will translate into your work
  • Ability to build relationships and interact with a diverse people easily.
  • Must be able to self-direct, take initiative and work independently while being part of a fast-paced and highly motivated team.
  • Ability to be flexible in adapting and learning new ideas and/or concepts.
  • Flexibility required in on-going training, workshops and/or learning opportunities which may be presented.
  • Broad knowledge of diverse cultures and sensitivity in dealing with diversity issues including race, gender, sexual orientation and economic status.
  • Have access to reliable transportation and willing to use it for job related tasks.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends when necessary
  • Must be able to travel overnight for several days at a time and approximately 30% each month.
  • Willingness to discuss and facilitate for projects and activities that are against racism.
  • Ability to constructively manage group tension and mediate conflicts when they arise.

WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Community and Office settings. Job could include minimum to high intensity noise level based on whether in the community or office setting.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; use hands and arms to perform repetitive motions; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. Typically an office environment with adequate lighting and ventilation and a normal range of temperature and noise level. Moderate dexterity application of basic skills (calculator, keyboard, eye/hand coordination. MENTAL: Must be able to relate well to all people of the community regardless of color, national origin, religion, sex, pregnancy, age, marital status, veteran status, sexual orientation, disability or socio-economic level. Must be emotionally mature, stable, tactful and be able to provide professional leadership.
