Heather Carpenter, Doctoral Student and Teresa Van Horn, MEd, School of Leadership and Education Sciences, presented their research on Entry-level Employees’ Competencies and Personal Attributes in the Workplace, Oct. 5, 2009 at the Nonprofit Human Resources Conference, Washington D.C.
Fred Galloway, PhD, co-authored an article with John R. Jenkins, titled, “The adjustment problems faced by international students and overseas Chinese students studying in Taiwan universities: A comparison of student and faculty/staff perceptions” published in Asia Pacific Education Review.
Robert Donmoyer, PhD, had his article entitled, “Theories about the Role of Theory in Nonprofit and Philanthropic Studies” published in Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly.
Cheryl Getz, EdD, had her article, “Teaching Leadership as Exploring Sacred Space” published in the September 2009 issue of Educational Action Research.
Cheryl Getz, with alum Tricia Bertram Gallant '06 (Ph.D.) wrote a chapter; "Facing Organizational Complexity and Change: Rethinking Leadership Development" for the 2009 text, New Horizons for Leadership Development of Faculty and Administrators in Higher Education.
Cheryl Getz, EdD, School of Leadership and Education Sciences, facilitated a Social Issues week conference dialogue of invited “transformational leaders” working in non-governmental and non-profit organizations from around the world. She was asked to frame the global dialogue in a way that helped participants reconnect with their deepest desires about why they do their work, and to share their experiences and challenges with each other. Student scholars from Virginia Tech University and USD, and faculty from Virginia Tech also took part.
Steve Gelb, PhD, School of Leadership and Education Sciences, had his piece entitled, “The Mixed Legacy of The Mismeasure of Man” accepted for publication in Contemporanea: Rivista di storia dell'800 e del '900, a journal for contemporary history published by Il Mulino publishing house. He was also recently appointed to a three year term on the Training and Certification Committee of the A. K. Rice Institute for the Study of Social Systems.
Kenneth Gonzalez, PhD, recently completed a commissioned piece entitled, “Using data to increase student success: A focus on diagnosis” for the national initiative, Achieving the Dream. More than 100 colleges will use his piece to guide the work in increasing student success.
Scott Himelstein, and Frank Kemerer, PhD, through the Center for Education Policy and Law (CEPAL), a joint undertaking of the School of Leadership and Education Sciences and School of Law, hosted thirty chambers of commerce and education leaders from across the state. The forum was designed to develop the relationships between chambers and their K-12 and community college partners in support of Career and Technical Education in public high schools. Featured speakers included Senator Mark Wyland, Jose Hernandez of ConnectED, and education finance researcher, Dr. Rich Seder. Participants also took a fieldtrip to the Kearny High Complex to visit the Construction Tech Academy and Digital Media Design high school. This was the third of three forums jointly sponsored by CEPAL and the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Noriyuki Inoue, PhD, wrote a chapter entitled, “The issue of reality in word problem solving” for the edited anthology, Modelling Verbal Descriptions of Situations: New Directions in Mathematics and Science Education published in Rotterdam, Netherlands, by Sense Publisher.
Noriyuki Inoue, PhD, had his article, “Rehearsing to teach: Content-specific deconstruction of instructional explanations in pre-service teacher trainings” published in the Journal of Education for Teaching.
Paula Krist, PhD, School of Leadership and Education Sciences, presented a concurrent session and a full-day workshop at the Southern Association of College and Schools (SACS) Annual Meeting in Atlanta, December 5-8, 2009. Workshop Title: Assessing Student Learning Outside the Classroom; Concurrent Session Title: Assessment, Outcomes, and Student Services Leadership.
Paula S. Krist, PhD, School of Leadership and Education Sciences gave a keynote address at the Institute on First Year Assessment in Charlotte, NC on October 10. Dr. Krist will give a keynote speech titled, “Program Assessment: How Institutional Research can support continuous quality improvement and student achievement for academic programs” at the first Middle East and North Africa Association for Institutional Research conference Nov. 11-12 in Dubai.
Theresa M. Monroe, EdD, was invited to participate in the University Scholars Programme at the National University of Singapore on August 27 & 28. Her talk, titled, "Bringing Leadership Theory and Education Back to Life" was part of a 2 day program on Thinking about Leadership.
JoEllen Patterson, PhD, Lee Williams, Ph.D., Todd M. Edwards, Ph.D., and co-authors published the second edition of their book, Essential skills in family therapy: From the first interview to termination.
George Reed, PhD, School of Leadership and Education Sciences published “The Impact of Destructive Leadership on Senior Military Officers and Civilian Employees” in the October 2009 edition of Armed Forces and Society, the Official Journal of the Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society. His article “Both the Parts and the Whole: Leadership and Systems Thinking” appeared in the August 2009 edition of The Systems Thinker.
George Reed, PhD, recently returned from addressing the class of 2010 at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. He presented on the topic of stewardship of the profession of arms on August 17th and participated in a panel discussion on military ethics.
SOLES faculty members Cheryl Getz and George Reed served as faculty at the Community College Leader Development Initiatives Summer Academies in Honolulu, Hawaii, July 5-10, and San Diego, August 5-7.
George Reed, PhD, presented "Great Questions of Leadership Studies" to the Hansen Summer Institute on Leadership and International Cooperation on July 2. The Hansen Summer Institute is an international program that provides a unique University-based leadership experience and program in international cooperation. For three weeks, ten young American men and women joined 20 students from a variety of developing countries and regions of social strife.
George Reed, PhD, traveled to Hyderabad, India June 18-25 to participate in a leader development program for information technology executives.
George Reed, PhD, presented at the United States Army Maneuver Support Center at Fort Leonard Wood on July 14. The topic of his presentation was "Toxic Leadership." In attendance were approximately 300 noncommissioned officers and officers participating in courses offered at the Military Police, Chemical, and Engineer schools.
Lonnie Rowell, PhD, School of Leadership and Education Sciences, presented at the Collaborative Action Research Network (CARN) Conference in Athens, Greece. Presentation Title: “On Creating a Culture of Inquiry in Teacher, Counselor, and School Leader Preparation: One Professional School’s Efforts to Bridge the Gap Between Theory and Practice.”
Lonnie Rowell, PhD, co-authored an article entitled, “Homework self-regulation: Grade, gender, and achievement-level differences” published in the June 2009 issue of Learning and Individual Differences.
Joi Spencer, PhD, wrote a chapter entitled, “Identity at the Crossroads: Understanding the Practices and Forces that Shape African American Success and Struggle in Mathematics,” for the edited book, Mathematics Teaching, Learning, and Liberation in African American Contexts.
Lee Williams, PhD, with alum Hawley Winter '07 (M.A.) had an article entitled, “Guidelines for an Effective Transfer of Cases: The Needs of the Transfer Triad” published in The American Journal of Family Therapy.
Susan Zgliczynski, PhD, School of Leadership and Education Sciences served as co-editor of the special issue of Career Planning and Adult Development Journal (Volume 24, Number 4, 2008-2009) on Career Development/Organizational Consulting in Asian Countries. She developed the issue by collaborating with career counseling and organizational development specialists in 13 Asian countries and the U.S. including Dr. Atsushi Takei, a recent visiting scholar at SOLES. Dr. Zgliczynski has been appointed to the Editorial Board for the inaugural publication year of the Journal for International Counselor Education (JICE), a peer-reviewed scholarly journal that promotes professional counselor education, preparation, training, and supervision of counselors internationally. The journal features original research, theory, pedagogy, and practice oriented articles that reflect the diverse and growing population of counselors globally. Dr. Zgliczynski presented papers at the 2009 Conference of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision entitled “Internationalization of a Counseling Graduate Program” and “Helping Students Increase Prevention, Remediation and Reflection Skills through Human Development Course Activities.” She is serving as the treasurer of the Coalition for Counselor Licensing (CCCL). The group was instrumental in the passing of SB 788 the landmark bill that recently established licensure for professional clinical counselors in California.
