Ann Garland, PhD is the founding chair of the Department of Counseling & Marital and Family Therapy. Dr. Garland’s research is designed to improve mental health care for children and families by bridging the gap between science and community practice. Her scholarly work addresses topics such as access to mental health care, racial and ethnic disparities in care, assessment of the delivery and outcomes of care, and implementation of evidence-based practice in community-based agencies. She has developed strong collaborative partnerships with a wide variety of community mental health providers and has earned grant support totalling over $10 million in funding. As a licensed Psychologist, Dr. Garland is active in clinical teaching and training for counselors and therapists and she has conducted research on clinical supervision strategies. She is widely published (over 100 peer-reviewed publications) and has served on multiple editorial and advisory boards. Dr. Garland received her doctorate in Clinical & Community Psychology from Yale University. She also holds a Master’s degree in Human Development from Teacher’s College, Columbia University, and a Bachelor’s degree with distinction from U.C. Berkeley. Dr. Garland is a native San Diegan.
