Educational researchers, for the better part of thirty years, have argued whether or not teaching should be professionalized or deregulated (Teacher Education and the American Future; Hanushek & Pace, 1995; Kumashiro, 2010; Levine, 2005; Sedlak, 1989; Wang, Spalding, Odell, Klecka, & Lin, 2010). The purpose of this study is to explore what teacher-credentialing programs are doing to build teaching as a profession. Through interviews with deans, department chairs, and classroom professors at three prominent, yet diverse, universities in a large county in the southwestern region of the United States, this study will investigate how teacher preparation programs instruct student teachers in professional dispositions, knowledge, and skills to professionalize teaching. This research hopes to find what commonalities credentialing programs have and explain the differences surrounding standards for accreditation.
