Online Discussions

In an effort to continue the discussion begun at each Spotlight on Education presentation, we have created an opportunity for an on-line discussion.  Because time is limited at the Spotlight meetings, this will allow for additional sharing of knowledge and reflection.

In what ways has the speaker’s discussion been helpful for your practice? What changes (if any) will you make in your school as a result of this discussion?
The speaker's discussion will assist me with my leadership as I work with my site teacher leaders and others. Her book is excellent as well. I've begun reading and it is very thoughtful in style for my reading purposes.
I have long been a proponent of "less equals more." Focus on a limited number of standardsat a time and reinfoce those before moving on. I am hoping our team will adopt that practice.
I will continue to reframe all discussions about school and district improvement within the context of national pride, a rapidly changing world environment, and the moral imperative that drives our work. I will continue to ask the question, "What year will it be when your students are your age?" This is the year we are preparing them to be successful in! (This question and resulting discussion moves folks from preparing students for a past that is no longer relevant and catapults them into a future we cannot predict. It certainly challenges folks to internalize the data Linda shared.
I will take a look at how we are providing on-going professional development for our teachers. I also want to share with teachers the idea of providing opportunities for revisions as a way to increase skills and performance in students.
This information will be given very high consideration as we consider revisions to the Multiple and Single Subjects teacher preparation programs at USD.
Bring back the concept of looping with my strongest staff members.
I will fight for systemic, district wide ongoing, meaningful professional development for teachers. I will fight for us to keep statewide and national testing and test prep in its proper place.
The way it is helpful is that several of my colleagues heard the same information so it gives a common reference point.

In what ways has the speaker’s discussion been helpful for your practice? What changes (if any) will you make in your school as a result of this discussion?
I continue to maintain a laser focus on supporting the system so that site leaders and teachers can stay focused on accelerating performance.
As I work with younger Principals, I will include in my discussions with them how to confront race and class issues and how to work and solve problems in these areas. I currently do not have a school.
This speaker provided REAL leadership qualities and skills that added to my repertoire. He exhibited what true leadership needs to embody. There has been NO ONE like him since he left San Diego.
If I were an administrator, I'd push for the collaborative coaching strategy. It's almost like a guided PLC and could provide a starting point for change.
Discussions like these help me refocus. They are invigorating.
It was good to see the practice through another set of lenses.
One concern that I have had is with students who come to school with no pre-school experience. I will continue to share information with the parents at my school about the importance of early literacy experience and exposure.
I'm going to share Tough Choice or Tough Times with my staff.
Mr. Payzant's remarks gave me a better understanding of school reform, at least from his experience, and some of the things he said confirmed my own beliefs.
I continue to maintain a laser focus on supporting the system so that site leaders and teachers can stay focused on accelerating performance.

Begin renaming professional development "professional learning"
I am continually thinking about the 3 "P" core components to change...Prof. learning, personalization, and precision...all surrounded our being as an educator, moral purpose. I all already put this to use in talking about the 2007-2008 budget/plan.
It was helpful personally and professionally it will serve as a platform for discussion with colleagues.
I am not at a school site but do work with teachers in small groups. Working togther in a structured way is so very important for improvement of teaching and learning.
Focusing on the experential background and current practice of teachers makes me look at building capacity in a better way.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts online. Please check back after the next Spotlight event to see the feedback from the next speaker.
