Carolina (Nina) Rostworowski Stocco
MEd TESOL, Literacy and Culture
What do you hope to do with your degree and/or credential, and why?
I plan to enrich my teaching experience and apply the knowledge I gain through the TESOL program at USD to my professional practice. I am also interested in furthering my research in the various approaches of teaching a second language.
When did you begin your program, and when do you anticipate completing it?
I started the program in Fall 2014 and will graduate in Summer 2016.
What is your background? For example, where are you from, where else have you earned a degree, and where have you worked?
I hold two degrees – journalism and education from private universities in my home country, Brazil. I specialized in psychopedagogy and have worked for over ten years as a teacher. I have taught English in language schools in Sao Paulo, English as a foreign language in private elementary schools and have worked as a full-time teacher in a private bilingual school. In the last school, I taught multiple subjects (math, language arts, science, social studies, and citizenship skills) to 1st-5th graders in English.
Have you completed an international experience? What did you do?
I attended a CATESOL conference in Santa Clara and volunteered at a CABES event in San Diego. These experiences were deemed sufficient in fulfilling my international experience requirement.
How has your SOLES education impacted your career and/or career goals?
I am honored to be a member of SOLES. The faculty, staff and students are friendly and committed to being changemakers in their specific areas. The issue of leadership in education is a central one today and SOLES provides me with the tools I know I will need in the future.
What are your plans for after graduation? What is your dream job?
I would like to continue my studies, further my readings and research, and ultimately hope to make a contribution to my field of study. If there is a dream job, it would involve practice, research, teaching, and innovation.
Is there anything else you would like to share with prospective students?
I am going through a fascinating experience and a demanding one as well. The standards are high, but I would not have it any other way. The effort required is substantial, but the results are personally gratifying.
