David Kim

MA Marital and Family Therapy

What do you hope to do with your degree and/or credential, and why?

I have a strong desire to work with individuals and couples from marginalized groups, such as low socioeconomic status families, the LGBT community, and the severely mentally ill. I hope to reach such groups through county–funded hospitals, as these clinical settings are often the first line of defense for those who do not actively seek or have access to mental health care.

When did you begin your program, and when do you anticipate completing it?

I enrolled as part of the Fall 2014 cohort and hope to complete the program by Spring 2016.

How did you hear about SOLES, and why did you choose to enroll?

My manager from my previous job at an entertainment market research firm is an alumnus of USD and highly recommended looking into its graduate schools. Lo and behold, I found that SOLES offered one of the finest MFT programs in the country. Enrolling into SOLES has been the greatest decision of my life.

Are you currently working? If so, do you work full-time or part-time, and what do you do?

I currently work part-time as a graduate assistant for the Dean’s Office at SOLES. This opportunity has allowed me to play an integral role in operations at Mother Rosalie Hill Hall, in addition to working on various projects through the Office of Admissions & Outreach. I definitely feel plugged into the SOLES community.

Have you completed an international experience? What did you do?

This spring break, I will have the unique opportunity to travel to Slovenia and Austria with faculty and my classmates through our Family Development course. There, I will have an exchange with MFT students from across the globe and present at a conference in Ljubljana.

How has your SOLES education impacted your career and/or career goals?

My education at SOLES has offered me invaluable insight and experiences that will help develop the essential skills and knowledge necessary to become a distinguished clinician in my field. The access to academic leaders, professional opportunities, and practicum placements are unparalleled at USD.

Is there anything else you would like to share with prospective students?

After my undergraduate career at UCLA, I wanted my graduate experience to be at a small, private institution. SOLES offers students an intimate community, caring support from faculty and staff, and strong academic programs with a focus on diversity.
