MA Counseling, specialization in Clinical Mental Health Counseling
When did you begin your program, and when do you anticipate completing it?
I began the program in Fall 2015 and anticipate completing the program in Spring 2018.
What is your background? For example, where are you from, where else have you earned a degree, and where have you worked?
I am originally from the Los Angeles area. I went to University of California, San Diego and got my BS in Psychology with a concentration in Neuroscience and Behavior along with a minor in Religion Studies. In undergrad, I worked with preschool children in their language development and in adolescent substance abuse research.
How did you hear about SOLES, and why did you choose to enroll?
I first heard about SOLES from an alumna from the program. She had nothing but praise for it. When I was looking into graduate school, I came across the University of San Diego and the different counseling options at SOLES. Once I learned more about the program at the SOLES Open House, I was sold! The faculty and staff really care about our education. I also love the emphasis on diversity here.
What do you hope to do with your degree and/or credential, and why?
I hope to work with adolescents in undeserved communities. Coming from such a similar community myself, I see the need for more mental health services in this population.
Are you currently working? If so, do you work full-time, part time, and what do you do?
I am currently working part time at an adolescent substance abuse research lab and primarily work with alcohol abuse. For four years, I have worked in the lab and am currently the data coordinator, so I make sure that the data is workable. I also take part in the analysis of the data.
