M.A. in Counseling, specialization in Clinical Mental Health Counseling
Why did you choose the field of counseling?
I want to work in this field because I believe in the process of counseling. I have a passion to help people through their challenges so that they can make positive choices and life changes.
Why did you choose SOLES?
I enrolled at SOLES for many different reasons. The main one being the chance to study internationally. I have always wanted to study aboard but it was difficult for me to make a semester or year long commitment. Through SOLES, I was able to experience Costa Rica in a way most people can’t even dream of.
Tell us about your practicum experience through SOLES.
I just started my first practicum at Springall Academy working with at risk youth who have academic, social or emotional problems. I co-facilitate two groups of adolescent boys and counsel 3 students privately. What has impacted me the most is what a difference just listening to a client can make in their lives.
Have you participated in an international experience through SOLES?
I went to Costa Rica for the Multicultural Counseling course. What an unforgettable experience! We studied at the University of Peace, visited a mental health hospital, hiked in the rain forest and much more! The week in Costa Rica gave me the opportunity to get out of my comfort zone and grow professionally and personally.
Which class has impacted you most?
The class that has impacted me the most is COUN 525 Group Dynamics. I loved this course because I was putting all my counseling skills to work and receiving live feedback from my peers and instructor. This class also brought me closer to my cohort.
What is your dream job?
My dream job is to work with individuals who have taken part in or experienced any type of violence, abuse and trauma.
Do you have any advice for prospective students?
Don’t hesitate to seek help or ask questions. Get connected with students in the cohorts ahead of you - they know what its like to be in your shoes.
