Preliminary Single Subject Credential

Department of Learning and Teaching

Program Overview

The Preliminary Single Subject Credential program prepares candidates to teach in departmentalized classrooms typically found in grades 7 through 12. This program prepares candidates to apply to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) for the 2042 credential, which is required in order to teach in California public schools.

Please note that most candidates now earn their Preliminary Single Subject Credential concurrently with an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction through our Master's Credential Cohort Program: Secondary Education. This program is offered in an accelerated 1-year or 2-year format and offers discounted tuition.
