for August Graduates
August graduates wishing to participate in the May 2008 ceremonies must have registered and paid for all their remaining units in the Summer and Intersession Office, Founders Hall, Room 108, by May 1, 2008.
August graduates who want to participate in the May ceremony must take all their remaining courses in USD’s Summer Sessions.
Upon payment, the Summer and Intersession Office will give you a “Graduation Clearance” form to take to the Registrar or Graduate Records Office as proof that you have registered and paid for your units.
All potential summer graduates must agree to complete all degree requirements in which they have pre-registered in USD’s Summer Sessions in order to qualify to participate in the spring graduation ceremony. If they withdraw from their summer course(s) after having participated in the graduation ceremony, their student account will be charged a forfeit fee equal to 100% of the tuition charges for the summer course(s) for which they are enrolled.
There are no exceptions to these policies.
Undergraduate Students
Summer courses taken through USD’s own program in Guadalajara meet the requirement for courses taken at USD.
August graduates who wish to take courses elsewhere (after procuring the appropriate waivers) may do so, but they may not participate in the May ceremony.
Unavailability of a needed course in USD’s Summer Sessions will not be grounds for an exception to the policy on Commencement participation.
Seniors graduating in August may not take an independent study course during the Summer Sessions. Exceptions to this policy may be approved by the student’s dean when there are extraordinary circumstances beyond the student’s control.
Graduate Students
Commencement participation and program listing at the annual May ceremony is limited to graduates who have met the October 12, 2007 graduation petition deadline and completed all work for their degree prior to Commencement, with the following exception:
Graduate students scheduled to receive their degree in August who have 9 units or fewer of remaining work may participate if their work falls in the category of: coursework, practicum, fieldwork, student teaching or internship. Petitions for August 2008 graduate students were due on Friday, December 14, 2007.
August graduates whose remaining program requirements include any of the following will not be allowed to participate in the preceding May Commencement: foreign language or comprehensive exam, final project or integration paper, master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation.
Registration of Non-USD Student
Undergraduate Students
Individuals not currently enrolled at USD and not holding a baccalaureate degree will be required to provide:
• Transcript(s) from all post-secondary institutions
• Letter of Approval from your present institution
• Undergraduate Special Student Application
• Registrar’s Information Form
• Academic Integrity Form
The last three forms are available in the Summer and Intersession Office, Founders Hall, Room 108, online at www.sandiego.edu/sio/registration/forms.php or by calling (619) 260-4800.
Graduate Students
Graduate-level courses are open to students holding a bachelor’s degree. Many of USD’s graduate courses are transferable to other graduate programs.
If you have a bachelor’s degree and are not currently enrolled at USD, you may apply as a Special Student through the Office of Graduate Admissions, Maher Hall, Room 253, grads@sandiego.edu, (619) 260-4524.
High School Students
High school students who have completed their junior year with at least a “B” average in all college entrance subjects must submit their high school transcripts and a letter of recommendation from their school principal or counselor in addition to the Special Student Application packet (see Undergraduate Students above). High school students may only take lower-division courses (number 100-299).
International Students
International students already enrolled at a U.S. institution can attend Summer courses provided that they are in good immigration standing at the school they are currently authorized to attend. The school that issued the student’s I-20 Form must authorize in writing that the student can attend classes at USD.
We are not able to accept and provide initial certificates of visa eligibility (I-20 Forms) to students that will attend USD for Summer only. If there are any questions, please call (619) 260-4678.
Note: Although Special Student status does not imply admission to a USD program, the courses can sometimes be applied toward degree requirements if you are later accepted into a USD program.
