The contributions of Donald Pearce Shiley to medical science are celebrated and memorialized for all time in the naming of this important science education resource, the Donald P. Shiley Center for Science and Technology. Recognized as a pioneer in science technology for his invention of numerous medical devices and a heart valve which revolutionized cardiac surgery, Mr. Shiley's work brought life to thousands throughout the world, and joy to thousands more as families and loved ones shared the victory of an extended lifetime.

The University of San Diego extends its sincere appreciation to the Shiley Family for the support and extreme generosity that has brought this Center into existence. In particular, we thank Donald for his scientific contributions, and Darlene, our trustee, for her loyalty and firm determination to make the world a better place.

Named in honor of Donald Shiley's mother, Inez Pearce, and Darlene Shiley's mother, Aldina Marcos, the Pearce-Marcos Atrium welcomes all who spend time in the Donald P. Shiley Center for Science and Technology. It features the sculpture that connects science and art, blending the disciplines, acknowledging the interconnectedness of knowledge. And it leads the eye through to the historic Presidio, connecting past to present, paving the way to the future and all the possibilities that will emerge from this Center.

"I feel fortunate to have been able to create medical devices that have had such far-reaching application. I know that students who are educated in these halls will go on to make even greater contributions in their own ways. It is an honor to be part of this.”
