The Shiley Center for Science and Technology is equipped with state-of-the
art instrumentation and equipment for teaching and research.
Instrumentation includes 500MHz and 400MHz nuclear magnetic resonance systems,
high pressure liquid chromatography – mass spectrometer, gas chromatography – mass
spectrometry, atomic analyzers, nutrient analyzer, bomb calorimeter, and a laser
particle sorter.
Several facilities were constructed for specialized functions, including the
machine shop, a seawater system with two 2,000 gallon tanks, environmental chambers,
aquarium room, laser laboratory, field prep room, and a greenhouse with five
rooms with independent climate controls. Research and teaching collections
include terrestrial and marine vertebrates, marine invertebrates, insects and
an herbarium. A 16ft. research vessel is available for marine science investigations.
Microscopic resources include scanning and transmitting electron microscopes,
an atomic force microscope, phase contrast microscope, helioscope, and scores
of stereoscopes and compound microscopes in teaching facilities.
