The Alice B. Hayes Science Scholarships/Fellowships

June 2003 marked the grand opening of the Shiley Center for Science and Technology, and the retirement of Dr. Alice B. Hayes, President of the University of San Diego.  As part of the opening of the Shiley Center, a scholarship fund, in honor of Dr. Hayes, was established to be disbursed amongst students, who display merit and need, majoring in Biology, Chemistry or Biochemistry, Marine Science, Environmental Studies, or Physics.  The scholarship may be applied to semester, summer, or intersession courses at USD, and will not exceed $5000.  Additionally, students may choose to use funding from the Hayes Scholarship fund to support summer and academic year research.  A committee of faculty members from the four science departments will judge applications, and award these scholarships/fellowships based upon merit and need.

IIn order to apply, you must meet the following qualifications:

  1. Sophomore or Junior standing at USD
  2. Grade point average of 3.25 or higher.
  3. Be a declared major in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, Marine Science, or Physics.

Your application will include:     

  1. Student Information Form
  2. Student Essay – The essay will be based on the following question.  How will your anticipated career demonstrate the mission and goals of the University of San Diego?  This essay may include references to general education courses, science courses at all levels, research experiences, or other relevant experiences.
  3. Three letters of recommendation, including at least one letter from outside the sciences.
  4. If you wish to apply Hayes funding to summer or intersession courses, please write a statement justifying this usage of the scholarship funds.
  5. If you wish to use Hayes funding to support a research project, please include a two page research proposal.  This research proposal should include a budget, not to exceed $5,000, of which you may apply $3,000 to summer salary, with the remainder to supplies, summer housing (on campus), and travel (conferences or field studies).
