About USD Admissions Academics News and Events Administration Athletics Giving

The scientific departments at USD strongly believe that participation in research is a critical element of a student's education. By working closely with faculty, students refine their analytical skills and move their knowledge base well beyond the classroom. In the research setting, students apply classroom knowledge to real-world problems. We encourage students to come join us on our voyage of discovery.

There is a diverse range of exciting research opportunities for students in the sciences. Faculty members in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Marine Science, and Environmental Studies all have research programs geared towards student involvement.

Financial support is an important component of student research. There are several USD programs and scholarships that provide funds to students interested in research. In addition, many faculty have extramural funding through research grants.

Many students travel to both national and international conferences to present their research results. Closer to home, USD hosts an annual Undergraduate Research and Internship Conference where students and faculty mix for a fantastic day of science and social opportunities.

In addition to undergraduate research, the department of Marine Science and Environmental Studies maintains a graduate program. Their department site, as well as the Graduate Studies page, can provide more information.

More information on all of these subjects can be found by using the left-hand navigation. Lists of specific project opportunities are divided up by department; follow the link to the desired field of research to get more information. In addition to the information that can be found by following the department links, several on-going projects have been highlighted.
