Why should I attend?

Students may be at a competitive disadvantage by not attending Summer Business Bridge Program. Specifically built for non-business major students, this program will give students insight and knowledge of common business practices, language and acumen. After completing the program, students will have an edge over their peers when entering the real world because they will understand how to apply business principles to any career choice and position. In addition, students will be able to add completion of the Summer Business Bridge Program to their resume and educational experience, show a future employer their accomplished work and utilize their newly acquired skills for networking, interviewing and salary negotiations.

What does the tuition fee include?

The tuition includes: hours of instruction, excursions, attractions, course materials, tutor support, and portfolio that includes a completed resume, cover letter, team capstone project, career assessments, personal goal setting, and tips for salary negotiation, interviewing and networking.

When is the deadline?

Tuesday, May 15, 2013. Enrollment received after this date will be considered for the program on a space available basis.

Is there an enrollment fee for the program?

Yes, $100 enrollment fee, which is non-refundable.

How do I know I have been accepted?

You will be notified by either email, US mail or call by May 22, 2013.

If I am a business major is this program for me?

This program has been specifically built for non-business majors to introduce the students to the basics of business accounting, finance, marketing, management, leadership, international business and supply chain. If a business major students feels they need more instruction for each of these subject areas then this program can be taken.

I have no business background will I be overwhelmed throughout the program?

No, the curriculum was specifically built for non-business students in mind. To support the success of all students in the program, tutors will be available throughout the session to work with each of the teams on their team projects as well as individual students needing extra help with the coursework.

Who teaches the classes?

All business courses are taught by USD School of Business Faculty and professional development workshops will be taught by campus and industry experts.

How many courses will be taught in the program?

The business content is drawn from many different courses offered in the Business School. The content has been melded into 3 distinct areas: Quantitative Analysis (Finance, Accounting, Economics), Marketing (Marketing, and International Business) and Management (Organizational Behavior, Ethics and Law, Operational Management)

What is the course schedule like?

Students will engage in 6-hours of instruction per day (Monday - Friday) to include a combination of business courses and professional development workshops. Graduation will take place Saturday, June 22, 2013.

*The schedule is subject to change and course offering order may be changed slightly to accommodate field trips and speaker opportunities.

Do I get credit for attending?

Yes, upon successful completion of the SBI program, all students will graduate with a Certificate in Business Fundamentals and 7.2 units of professional credit. It will be determined by the stundent's home institution if these units are transferable. What is the capstone project?

The capstone project provide an opportunity to work in teams, and apply strategically the business components that are being learned to a case study. This experiential learning outcome is pivotal for students to gain a greater understanding of how the business fundamentals are applied in everyday business and industry.

How will I be evaluated?

Students will take a quiz upon completion of each of the business courses. All students need to pass with an 70% or greater. The capstone project will also be graded by a panel of faculty and industry leaders and the team will receive a grade for their presentation and content. All students must attend all courses and workshops, unless an unforeseen circumstance occurs in which the student will need to discuss the absence with the faculty advisor.

Do I receive a certificate?

Yes, all students upon successful completion of the program will participate in a graduation ceremony and receive a Certificate in Business Fundamentals from the University of San Diego. Family and friends are encouraged to attend the graduation ceremony on Saturday, June 22, 2013.

Will I be able to live on campus?

Yes, students can stay on campus and live in the executive apartments specifically assigned to students in this program. For more information email USD Hospitality Services at meetatusd@sandiego.edu

Will I be able to utilize USD’s facilities?

As a student of the Summer Business Institute you will have access to gym and pool facilities, Copley Library, discounts in the USD bookstore (computers and books excluded), on-campus eating establishments, dry cleaning and food delivery services (additional charges may apply to specific services)
