Hate Crimes/Bias Incidents 2008

On December 7, 2008 the Department of Public Safety received a report (case #08-01313) of a bias-motivated statement that was discovered at approximately 10:27pm. The incident involved a homophobic statement, and was written on a name tag on a residence hall door.  A Resident Assistant noticed the comment and immediately notified Public Safety.  Public Safety officers photographed the comment then disposed of the defaced name tag, and are working to determine the individual(s) responsible for this incident.  Bias Incident Alerts were distributed and posted throughout the residential halls in an attempt to notify and solicit community members' assistance with this investigation. Location: PALOMAR HALL
On November 11, 2008 the Department of Public Safety received a report (case #08-01220) of a bias-motivated statement that was discovered at approximately 11:30pm. The incident involved a homophobic statement, and was written on a dry-erase board in a non-permanent marker.  A Resident Assistant noticed the comment and immediately notified Public Safety.  Public Safety officers photographed and then erased the comment, and are working to determine the individual(s) responsible for this incident.  Anyone with knowledge of either incident is encouraged to contact the Department of Public Safety at (619) 260-7777. On October 7, 2008 the Department of Public Safety received a report (case #08-01042) of a bias-related incident that occurred on October 1, 2008 at approximately 11:00pm. The incident involved sexual-orientation and racially biased statements that had been shouted from a residence hall in Missions A building to a University student.  Witnesses to this incident filed a Public Safety report this afternoon and Public Safety officers commenced an investigation to find the person(s) responsible for the incident.  Anyone with knowledge of either incident is encouraged to contact the Department of Public Safety at (619) 260-7777. Summary: On September 25, 2008 the Department of Public Safety received two reports (case #08-00977 and #08-00978) of bias-related incidents. Both incidents involved bias-related statements that had been written on posters in residence halls within the San Juan and San Luis building.  The posters with the bias-related statements were immediately removed by Resident Assistants.  Upon receiving the report, Public Safety Officers took photos of one of the posters with inappropriate statements (08-00978), though the other poster had since been discarded as the incident was reported a week after it took place on 09/17/2008.  Public Safety officers commenced an investigation to find the person(s) responsible for the incidents.  Anyone with knowledge of either incident is encouraged to contact the Department of Public Safety at (619) 260-7777. Summary: On January 30, 2008 the Department of Public Safety received a report (case #08-00062) of a bias related incident which was observed on December 23, 2007. The incident involved bias-related statements that had been written on a newspaper clipping posted on a resident hall room door.
