COMMUNITY OUTREACH REGARDING BIAS INCIDENT AT SPORTS CENTER POOL AREA
03/24/2010

At approximately 2:16 pm on Saturday, March 20, 2010, the Department of Public Safety received a report of possibly offensive music being played at a University-sponsored event. The reporting party alleged that music with racist and derogatory terms was being played during what was later determined to be an event hosted by a USD student group in the Sports Center Pool area. A Public Safety officer confirmed that one song on the playlist for the event did contain offensive words and material and should not have been played at the event. All other songs played at the event had been edited for offensive content.

A Sensitive Issues Team was convened on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 to review the incident and determine an appropriate response. A referral to the discipline office was made, and efforts are underway to identify any students and/or community members who may have been impacted by listening to this one song that was not appropriately checked for content (any individual who may have been affected by listening to this inappropriate song is encouraged to contact the Department of Public Safety at 619-260-7777).

The University of San Diego will not tolerate any bias-related incidents and will respond to them with appropriate sanctions. For more information regarding USD’s Hate Crimes and Bias Motivated Incidents Response Procedures, please refer to the link below: http://www.sandiego.edu/safety/responseprocedures.php
