CAMPUS ACTIVE SHOOTER
…There is a Firearms/Shooting Incident
The potential for a school shooting exists on every campus throughout the United States. Although the possession of firearms on or around the campus is prohibited, previous local and national shootings dictate the importance and need for a response plan. In the event you observe an individual with any type of weapon on the campus, immediately contact Public Safety at ext. 2222 or (619) 260-2222.
If a Shooting Occurs
Call Public Safety at ext. 2222 or (619) 260-2222. Identify yourself; give the building name and your exact location inside of the building. Remain calm and answer the Public Safety dispatcher’s questions. They are trained to obtain the necessary and required information for a proper emergency response.
Instruct staff and students to drop to the ground immediately. If within a short distance of a safe place of cover, duck and run to it.
Move or crawl away from gunfire, trying to utilize any obstructions between you and the gunfire. Remember that many objects of cover may conceal you from sight, but may not be able to stop a bullet.
Try to get inside or behind a building and stay down.
When you reach a place of relative safety, stay down and do not move. Do not peek or raise your head in an effort to see what may be happening.
Wait and listen for directions from Public Safety officers and/or other law enforcement officers.
If Suspect is Outside of a Classroom/Resident Hall Building or Room
Keep students inside the classroom and down on the floor. Move behind available cover inside the classroom.
Close and lock the outside door to the classroom if possible. Close the blinds turn off the lights and stay on the floor or behind cover. Do not peek out the door or windows to see what may be happening.
Call Public Safety at ext. 2222 or (619) 260-2222, if possible to report the location of the assailant.
