Summary
The Patrol Division of the Department of Public Safety is primarily responsible for handling all emergency calls and crimes in progress. It also investigates all non-violent property crimes that occur on USD property pursuant to a memorandum of understanding with the San Diego Police Department. Officers receive training in criminal law, patrol procedures, firearms, use of force, investigations, report writing, first aid, CPR, and the use of Automatic External Defibrillators. In-service training ensures that officers remain capable and up-to-date in their skills.
Deployment
Shifts are staggered to ensure appropriate coverage in the field during breaks and shift changes. Typical deployment of a patrol shift would include 3 officers. Maximum deployment occurs on Friday and Saturday evenings during peak activity hours, when, on average, 7 officers are protecting the campus. Methods of Patrol include marked vehicles, bicycle and walking units. Emphasis is placed on safety and crime prevention through the use of highly visible uniformed officers who patrol the campus roadways, enforce traffic violations and conduct walkthroughs of campus buildings.
Escort Service
Escorts from point to point are available at any time of the day or night for persons uncomfortable walking alone or in fear for their safety.
Response Times
Response times to emergency calls for service are typically 1-2 minutes. Response times to routine calls for service are typically 4-5 minutes barring any occurring emergency event. The safety of our students, faculty, staff and guests is our primary concern.
