Restoring Respect

Drop Shadow

Fall Breakfast 2012

On October 3, 2012, Restoring Respect held its fall breakfast to promote civility in the fall political campaigns. About 90 people –from the San Diego community including members of the League of Women Voters, San Diego and North County chapters and students, faculty and staff from the University of San Diego, San Diego Mesa College.  The program addressed the question:  Fed Up?  Have uncivil campaigns and negative Ads made you lose your appetite?

The Reverend George Walker Smith, founder of the Catfish Club of San Diego and Co-Chair of Restoring Respect’s steering committee, gave welcoming remarks. Dr. Edward Luck, Dean of USD’s Kroc School of Peace Studies,  followed with an overview on the question of civility and civil dialogue at both the global and local levels. Retired KGTV award-winning anchor Hal Clement  then took over the microphone as moderator for an interactive panel discussion. Lani Lutar, President and CEO of the San Diego County Taxpayers Association spoke about personal experiences with incivility in the world of social media.  BH Kim, the new Executive Director of the San Diego Foundation’s Burnham Center For Civic Engagement discussed ways he had worked with the Mayor of Los Angeles to promote greater civic dialogue with LA communities. State Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher provided observations on how civil dialogue in Sacramento helps bring about compromise and the successful passage of legislation and how incivility produces gridlock.  The panel’s remarks were followed by an extended Q&A with audience members, including students from San Diego’s Mesa and City Colleges and members of the San Diego and North County chapters of the League of Women Voters.

Many thanks to the following schools and colleges for showing support for Restoring Respect, our community and our students by sponsoring student tables at the breakfast:
