Resident Assistant Position

Resident Assistants (RAs) are student staff who live in each hall and provide support to residential students. RAs are assigned to a specific community on a specific staff. Each RA reports directly to their Community Director (CD). At USD, the RA staffs range in size from 8-16. The RA staff’s main objective is to foster a sense of community in each hall.  RAs are responsible for enforcing community standards, upholding health and safety expectations, supporting the programmatic efforts of the area, and being a general resource for their residents.  Additional details and job responsibilities can be reviewed in the RA Position Description

Benefits

The RA position fosters many leadership skills, including organization, communication, and crisis management.  RAs receive a scholarship that covers the cost of their room and a meal plan.  There are several meal plan options for RAs, which are selected during the summer prior to the term of employment.   

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be a full-time student
  • Have a class standing of “Second Year” or above for the academic year they would serve. In other words, applicants must have at least one year experience as a USD student. 
  • Have a 2.75 cumulative GPA
  • Be in good disciplinary standing. 
  • NOT serve simultaneously as the Associated Students President or a Preceptorial Assistant.
  • NOT miss summer training for Pre-Orientation Leadership positions.

Timeline

  • November 2016: Study Abroad Process
    • Students studying abroad in Spring 2017 will receive an email about this process.
  • November 2016: RA Application for Spring interview process available
  • December 2016 – February 2017: RA Information Sessions
  • February 5, 2017: RA Application Deadline
  • February 15, 2017 & February 16, 2017: Individual Interviews
  • February 17, 2017: Invitation for Group Process sent
  • February 24, 2017 & February 25, 2017: Group Process
  • March 3, 2017: Decision letters sent

How to Apply

  • Attend an information session.  It is required for each RA applicant to attend one session.  Below are the dates of the 2016-2017 Information Sessions Dates:
    • Wednesday, November 30, 2016 – Maher 205 @ 9pm
    • Thursday, December 1, 2016 – Missions Crossroads @ 8pm
    • Monday, December 5, 2016 – Palomar Multipurpose Room @ 8:30pm
    • Monday, January 30, 2017 – Missions Crossroads @ 8pm
    • Monday, January 30, 2017 – Palomar Multipurpose Room @ 9pm
    • Tuesday, January 31, 2017 – SLP 320 (Changemaker Hub) @ 12:30pm
    • Tuesday, January 31, 2017 – Maher 205 @ 8:30pm
    • Wednesday, February 1, 2017 – UC 113 (BSRC) @ 7pm
    • Wednesday, February 1, 2017 – Manchester 1st Floor Board Room @ 7:30pm
    • Wednesday, February 1, 2017 – Missions Crossroads @ 9pm
    • Thursday, February 2, 2017 – Camino Lounge @ 9pm
    • Monday, February 6, 2017 – Missions Crossroads @ 8pm
  • Fill out an Application by Sunday, February 5, 2017.
  • Sign up for an Individual Interview time.  These interviews will take place on:
    • Wednesday, February 15, 2017 from 9am to 1pm
    • Thursday, February 16, 2017 from 12pm to 5pm
  • Send the Reference Form to the person you indicated on your application.  Reference forms must be completed by Sunday, February 19, 2017.
  • Those selected to participate in the Group Process will be notified by Friday, February 17, 2017.  The group processes will take place on:
    • Friday, February 25, 2017 from 1:45pm to 4:30pm
    • Saturday, February 26, 2017 from 9:45am to 12:30pm
  • Decision letters will be sent to your USD email address on Friday, March 3, 2017.
