... Be An Amazing Parent?
Senior Bett Simpson, whose parents were selected as USD's
2002 Parents of the Year, explains the qualities for which they
were honored.
Have Faith
Faith gives parents perspective, hope and guidance. It allows
families to rejoice in happy times, and realize there is hope
in every tragedy. Through faith, my parents taught me that life
is not always perfect and happy, but that it always can be fulfilling.
Give
Give your things, your time and your heart to those in need. There
always is something you can give, and in giving we always receive.
Listen
Often parents are quick to give advice, before asking what their
child is thinking or feeling. Ask and let your child talk, then
give your guidance. After you have listened your child, he or
she will be more likely to listen to your advice, because they
know you understand their perspective.
Believe
My parents always made me believe I could accomplish anything,
which helped me make my dreams become reality. My parents encouraged
me to find my own path and pursue it with all my heart. Their
encouragement helped me scale mountains others thought were impossible
to climb.
Forgive
The best lesson in forgiveness you can give your child is to be
an example of that grace. If you hold grudges, your children will
do the same. Love your neighbor and forgive, and your child will
follow in your footsteps.
Laugh and Love
Even in the hardest of times, it's amazing how laughter is medicine
for the soul. My mom sometimes does it until she cries, a habit
I have gladly inherited. And love your children unconditionally.
Don't always love what they do, but always love them. You can
never go wrong with love.
