Award of Excellence
Each year, the Parents Association recognizes an outstanding member of the USD community for his or her impact on the lives of our students. We invite parents and students to submit nominations.
Please take this opportunity to recognize any member of USD faculty, staff or administration who has made a difference in your son or daughter’s experience at USD. Perhaps it is a supervisor at your student’s work study position, a community director, professor or coach. There are so many amazing people here at USD, we know it must be hard to choose just one!
2008 Award of Excellence recipient Liberty Hebron, executive assistant in the Student Leadership and Involvement Center, with Vice President Carmen Vazquez and Andrew Woodbury ‘09. Hebron was nominated by Andrew, who wrote in his nomination, “Liberty has helped make my experience at USD such a memorable one and has taught me so much outside of the classroom that I will always value and cherish.”
Eligibility:
The nominee must be an employee of USD for a period of at least 12 months by the time of presentation of the award.
Nominating Procedures:

- Nominating individual must complete the nomination form.
- Nomination forms must be submitted to the Office of Parent Relations.

3. This person demonstrates that extra dimension of support, kindness, caring, understanding, believing, etc., in the student. Message from Student Affairs
Dear Torero Parents,
With the 2009 fall semester in full swing, the campus has been energized by students pursuing their academic goals and engaging in the USD community. Students are expressing excitement about classes, new leadership roles, and being part of a vibrant Torero community which has been vitalized by the new Student Life Pavilion. The month of October is filled with many important events, including: National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week (NCAAW), our on-going Cold and Flu campaign, and Family Weekend.
On October 18, 2009, National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week (NCAAW) will begin. Throughout the week, peer educators will address the risks associated with binge drinking, empower students to make informed decisions around alcohol, and challenge the notion that binge drinking is a common practice among college students. According to a recent campus-wide survey over one third of USD students choose not to drink. This week is an opportunity for all community members to consider their choices around alcohol. Please take this opportunity to check in with your student about his or her alcohol use, encourage involvement in NCAAW activities, and refer your student to the Center for Health and Wellness Promotion (website: http://www.sandiego.edu/chwp/ - (619) 260-4618) for any alcohol or other drug related questions or concerns.
During the month of October, the Student Health Center will continue to provide the seasonal flu vaccine (the nasal FluMist) and will initiate a campaign to administer the H1N1 vaccine as soon as it becomes available with major H1N1 vaccination clinics in November. For the second year in a row, Associated Students (AS) sponsored the seasonal flu vaccination program for undergraduate students. Seasonal flu vaccines were given free of charge to the first 650 undergraduate students vaccinated.
According to the National College Health Assessment, over 30% of USD students experienced a cold, flu or sore throat that impaired their performance. Students are likely to experience at least two upper respiratory infections each year, impacting academic performance and overall quality of life. The good news is that there are several things your student can do to protect him or herself and the USD community from illness. These simple, but effective steps include:
- Covering his or her nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing and throwing the tissue in the trash after use.
- Washing his or her hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing; alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
- Avoiding touching one’s eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
- Not sharing food, drink, or utensils.
- Getting the seasonal flu and the H1N1 vaccines.
If your son or daughter gets the flu, the CDC recommends that he or she stay at home or in one’s residence hall until he or she is symptom free and has had no fever for 24 hours. While sick, ask your son or daughter to limit contact with others to keep from infecting others.
Please encourage your student to take steps to stay healthy and advise him or her that flu shots are available on campus. For up-to-date information about influenza on our campus and other special alerts please visit the USD Special Alert Website (http://www.sandiego.edu/alert/influenza/).
Thank you for supporting your student as he or she seeks to achieve academic success. I look forward to seeing those of you who will have the opportunity to attend Family Weekend, October 23rd through October 25th, 2009.
In Torero Spirit,
Carmen M. Vazquez
