Update on the task force on immigration and DACA

December 16, 2016

Dear USD Campus Community:

As we complete the fall semester, I wish to provide you with an update on the work of the presidential task force that I formed to identify ways that USD can support and protect our immigrant and international students as well as our employee population should there be any changes in immigration policy and enforcement. I am pleased to report that the task force has made very sound and constructive recommendations to deepen our commitment to students, colleagues, families and those connected to USD in the community who are experiencing a sense of uncertainty.

You can access the recommendations here.

I enthusiastically endorse and will actively support all of the recommendations by the task force. We are taking immediate steps to begin implementing the recommendations, starting with the development of a dedicated website featuring counseling, pastoral and legal services available on and off our campus for our students, employees, their families and members of our local community. We expect to launch the website in early January.

The process carried out by the task force was an exemplary collaboration among faculty, staff and administrators, resulting in a thoughtful plan of action that reflects our Culture of Care. I firmly believe that it sets a standard for engagement to confront any potential forms of discrimination and injustice, while at the same time offering assurances of support, safety and solidarity to those in need.

The task force will continue to meet throughout the spring semester to monitor and respond to developments on this important topic. I want to extend a special thanks to Dean Ferruolo for chairing the task force and to all of the task force members for your sincere efforts in defending and protecting our Torero family.

Sincerely,

James T. Harris III, D.Ed.
President
