Announcing New Director of Athletics Bill McGillis

December 19, 2016

Dear USD Campus Community:

We will be announcing today to the news media that our national search to find a new Associate Vice President and Executive Director of Athletics has produced a wonderful outcome with the hiring of Mr. Bill McGillis. Bill currently serves as the Athletic Director at the University of Southern Mississippi. Prior to his arrival at Southern Miss in 2013, he had served in several other leadership roles, including five years as the athletic director at the University of Evansville.

Our applicant pool was strong and deep, and we had remarkable people submit their credentials for consideration. In the end, Bill’s passion for student-athlete success, his significant athletic experience and his alignment with our values as a contemporary Catholic university made him the ideal choice.

Several people helped us find our new athletic director. First, the previous success of our athletic program clearly was a draw to many candidates. This is due in large part to the extraordinary leadership Ky Snyder has provided over the past 13 years. I am grateful for the leadership our faculty athletic representative, Dr. Mitch Malachowski, provided as chair of the search committee, as well as the thoughtful participation by all of the committee members.  I am also very appreciative of the time and energy the chair of the Athletics Committee of the Board, Mr. Jeff Martin, contributed to the committee.  Overall, it was a great team effort that produced a remarkable result.

Bill and his wife Margie, both natives of Seattle, have five children. We look forward to welcoming Bill and his family to our Torero family early next year.

Sincerely,

James T. Harris III, DEd
President
