Apr. 11, 2017

Dear USD Community:

It is my pleasure to announce that Gail F. Baker, Ph.D., has accepted my offer to serve as the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at the University of San Diego. Dr. Baker currently serves as the Dean of the College of Communication, Fine Arts and Media and the Executive Associate to the Chancellor at the University of Nebraska Omaha. She will officially join our university community this summer. http://www.sandiego.edu/news/detail.php?_focus=59229

Dr. Baker brings to USD more than 30 years of leadership experience in higher education, journalism and the corporate sector. In addition to her impressive administrative experience, she has earned recognition for her work as a teacher, scholar, public relations practitioner and writer. She has authored books and articles in her academic field and has been recognized with four Emmy Awards for excellence in documentary writing and producing.

At UNO, Dr. Baker has been instrumental in the development of the university’s identity as an anchor institution in Omaha. She is also a committed Roman Catholic who together with husband, James McCarty, are the parents of four children.  Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Provost Search Committee, the university attracted more than 100 applicants from across the globe and produced three outstanding finalists who visited our campus in March. I am deeply grateful to the members of the committee, ably co-chaired by Vice President Carmen Vazquez and Associate Provost Carole Huston, for their time, dedication and commitment to conducting an open and inclusive search process. I also wish to thank our search consultant, Dr. Paul Chou from Korn-Ferry, for his good work.

Finally, I wish to publicly thank Dr. Andrew Allen for his leadership and dedicated service as Vice President and Provost since 2014. He has served with distinction during this period and has provided me with sound counsel and advice during my first two years as president. I am so pleased he will continue to serve in a leadership role as Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness and Strategic Initiatives.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Gail F. Baker to the USD community when she arrives in July.

Sincerely,

James T. Harris III, DEd
President
