USD Just Read Focuses on ‘The Bluest Eye'

Inside USD -- Starting Thursday, and over the next few weeks, members of the University of San Diego community will participate in reading and discussing Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Toni Morrison’s 1970 book The Bluest Eye as part of the USD Just Read program.

The book details the story of an 11-year-old black girl, Pecola Breedlove, who prays to have blue eyes and gets them. The book, set in 1941, takes the reader on an imaginary journey with Pecola in her pursuit of these blue eyes. The story offers a variety of themes such as whiteness and blackness, beauty and ugliness, purity and impurity, perfection and imperfection, superiority and inferiority and equality and inequality.
