Peace and Justice Studies Minor
We offer two parallel minors to provide you with an understanding of critical issues in peace and justice. The first is for students currently enrolled in the University of San Diego who have already declared their intention to minor in Peace and Justice Studies. If you are newly enrolled in USD in September 2015 and beyond, you can choose the second minor in Peacebuilding and Social Innovation. Both minors are inter-disciplinary in nature and aim to foster critical thinking, moral imagination and positive social change. The curricula and requirements for the two minors are different as described below. Faculty advisor Dr. Necla Tschirgi will work with you to plan a program of study. You can contact her by phone (619) 260-7912 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Peace and Justice Studies
The current minor in Peace and Justice Studies consists of 18 units divided among a lower division prerequisite (3 units), upper division distribution requirements (12 units), and a capstone seminar (3 units). Students may satisfy the upper division requirements by completing a thematic focus (conflict resolution, development and sustainability, international relations, or domestic justice) or regional focus (Asia, Europe, Latin America, or Middle East and Africa). You may select a maximum of two courses from any single discipline in either focus. Upper-division courses in the PJS minor may not be double counted in other majors and minors, although they can be counted for both the PJS minor and upper division core curriculum requirements. If you are a current student, follow the information in the course catalog.
Peacebuilding and Social Innovation
The new minor in Peacebuilding and Social Innovation consists of 18 units divided among a lower division prerequisite (3 units) and upper division distribution requirements (15 units). Both the lower division pre-requisite and 9 units under the new minor will be courses offered by the Kroc School. However, you will also be able to take 2 upper level units from any relevant discipline. The new minor does not require a capstone. Instead, we encourage you to take advantage of various practical experiences including internships, community service learning and study abroad programs which count towards the minor.
