The ravages caused by the AIDS pandemic, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, have threatened to overwhelm the affected countries, hollowing out societies and cutting down people during their most productive years. Other communicable diseases have also seemed intractable, and collectively they and AIDS make up a health crisis presenting challenges on multiple levels: social, economic, and political, as well as medical. The challenges are exacerbated in the context of a country, like many, only recently emerging from conflict: Liberia.

At the same time, exciting signs of progress can be found in some unexpected quarters, brought about by unexpected actors.

Come and hear about successful efforts to combat this disease and learn what you can do to contribute.

Dr. Mona Lydon-Rochelle, PhD, MPH, CNM, Associate Professor at the University of Washington in Seattle will talk about health in sub-Saharan Africa, drawing specifically on her recent experience working in Liberia.

Justin Chung, USD ’07, and active in the USD chapter of FaceAIDS will speak about what audience members can do to help on a host of levels.

The Campaign FACE AIDS is a student campaign to raise $1 million to aid those affected by this epidemic in Africa. The purpose is to raise student awareness and educate others of the present situation. 1 in 30 people in Zambia are affected by the pandemic. To help these individuals, FACE AIDS is selling beaded pins handcrafted by the people in Zambia affected by the disease.
